Activesync works over the same link as your Outlook Web Access. If you are 
running SSL it will be encrypted in transit.

By default the device's themselves don't encrypt the data that is at rest on 
them. This can be enabled on certain devices based on vendor etc.

I believe the Windows Mobile 6.1 is required for this capability.

If you're using SSL the traffic is protected in that regards. ActiveSync
does not protect data at rest on the device. I'd highly suggest looking at
Good Mobile if data protection is even a minor concern.
