We have a pure NT4.0 SP6 environment into which I'm trying to
introduce a new exchange server running on Win
  2K.
I have an Windows 2000 server SP2 with a copy of Exchange 5.5

When I go to set-up the internet mail service I get an error
message saying that I need to configure DNS.

We don't have a DNS server (although we do have Wins) as all
DNS records are held by our ISP. How do I go about
  configuring this feature.
IN NT4.0 SP6 with Exchange 5.5. SP4 it was possible to just
enter a DNS name with out the server IP.
  Any pointers would be welcome.

2002-01-09 Thread Neil Hobson

Under NT4, you still needed to fill in the DNS host and domain names
within the networking properties on the server in order to install the
IMS - it's probably the same under Windows 2000, e.g. you need to enter
the primary DNS suffix of the server, etc.

Write down the EXACT error and plug it into the MSKB. There is an article
that explains the exact steps to get past that.

This is exactly the issue I ran into when migrating E5.5 to Win2k, cleared up after adding the Primary DNS suffix, like Neil suggested.
