RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files
To Move Log Files (from Q257184) 1. Start Exchange System Manager. 2. Locate the Administrative Group. 3. Open the properties on the Storage Group for which you want to change log file paths. 4. On the General tab, change the Transaction Log Location by clicking Browse, and then specifying a new drive or directory location for the log files. -Original Message- From: Diane Beckham [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 25 October 2001 17:05 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files Simon, how do this work in EK2000? -Original Message- From: WEAVER, Simon [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, October 24, 2001 11:01 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files Everyone is pointing towards Exchange Perf. At present I am running Backup Exec with differential backups and so have turned off Circular logging. This has also been suggested in some of the reading I have done on exchange. As a result, more log files are being written in the mdbdata directories. Ideally, I would like to move these and all other logging files to the d: drive and I would like to know, should this be done only when there are no users on the system, will this improve or adversly affect the operation of the exchange server and will Backup Exec have a problem backing up the exchange mailboxes if these files are moved in the middle of the day. An error showed up on Bup Exec yesterday that it could not backup the Information stores because the log files had been moved or deleted after I tried to move a users mailbox and import it on to the Exchange server. This filled up the c: drive (he had 2000 messages) with loging files in mdbdata and shut down the Exchange services. So I moved the log files to the d: drive temporarily to get exchange running. If I move them back c:\ will fill up again and down the service. Also, How can I find out how big the information store is for a particular user? What a mess! Thanks. My apologies, I was going to reply, but someone beat me to it! But as detailed below, simply goto the properties of the storage group you with to move and choose browse. I would also make sure you have a FULL Backup of exchange once the move has been successful! I assume then that you do have Exch2k? RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files
Do you know if Exchange 2000 comes with an equivalent of the Perf Optimizer or if not why it doesn't? Do MS just assume it's obvious where the log files and database files should be kept so didn't include the tool as that's all Perf Optimizer really does/suggests? -Original Message- From: WEAVER, Simon [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 26 October 2001 08:57 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files No probs - thanks ;-) But I always wondered whether the guy has Ex5.5 or Ex2k! Thanks. RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files
Title: RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files I assume you've used OPTIMZER with the -V option to move the log files to a larger drive? Also, as part of the initial install of Exchange.. you should always change to another drive from C: drive(as it defaults to C:\exchsrvr) usually D. This is especially true on an Exchange server you add an IMC too as all TMP files are written to the local initial install point as it converts over for delivery by the MTA via the WORK QUEUES. Look under mailbox Resources in the Exchange ADMIN utility. It's listed under Private Store on the container of the server the Mailbox is located under. Hope that helps.. -Rick -Original Message- From: Jennifer Gaylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, October 24, 2001 8:57 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Need help moving Exchange database log files I need to move the exchange database logging files (edb and mdb) off of my main hard drive as they are filling up the drive and shutting down the Exchange services. Run the Exchange Performance Optimizer to move the log files. In the Admin program, look at the Mailbox Resource view under the server where the user is homed to see the size of the mailbox. * * Erik Sojka, MOS, MCSE * * Manager, Network Services * * [EMAIL PROTECTED] * * -Original Message- From: Jennifer Gaylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, October 24, 2001 11:57 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Need help moving Exchange database log files I need to move the exchange database logging files (edb and mdb) off of my main hard drive as they are filling up the drive and shutting down the Exchange services. RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files
Hi, Prior to moving log files you should stop exchange services, that means that all users will be kicked off automatically or their outlook client will hang, so you might want to do this when as few people as possible are using the system. If you want to move where the default places for your logs are you should run the exchange optimizer. It will give you some parametres where exchange thinks all files should be placed but you can easily change them. If your backup software is configured correctly it should delete the log files after a succesful backup, except for tracking logs for which you can specify different retention times depending on how long back you want to be able to track messages. You can view the mailbox resources if you go to the private information store of the server in question. Hopefully this answers some of your questions, I'm quite new to this list so please correct me if I'm wrong on any accounts. Br. RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files
Hi Jennifer The best way of moving things around is to run the performance optimizer, it will down the Exchange services though.. It will make some suggestions as to where to put things after running some test, but then you can change them and tell it to move everything for you. RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files
You should let the optimizer do it. It will stop the services for you and make suggested changes to you that you can override. Why would you not let this service work for you. dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, October 24, 2001 10:39 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files Hi, Prior to moving log files you should stop exchange services, that means that all users will be kicked off automatically or their outlook client will hang, so you might want to do this when as few people as possible are using the system. RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files
Title: RE: Need help moving Exchange database log files Hi Jennifer. I guess we are assuming this is Exchange5.5? Consider doing full backups nightly. (It would be my choice wherever possible for Exchange.) You have 2 hard drives, C: and D:? Perhaps a new drive F:\ is in order? As others have said, performance optimiser is the tool to use for moving databases/logfile locations. It is important because it does a lot more than just move them. It tests many parameters to adjust performance based on the locations. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q266/0/51.ASP To check mailbox size for a user, look in Exchange Administrator, under the server--private information store--mailbox resources William Lefkovics, MCSE, A+ -Original Message- From: ext Jennifer Gaylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 24 October, 2001 18:57 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Need help moving Exchange database log files I need to move the exchange database logging files (edb and mdb) off of my main hard drive as they are filling up the drive and shutting down the Exchange services.
