RE: Preferred Disk Config

We are running RAID 5 for the information store but RAID 0+1 is obviously
better in performance. If you can afford the drives, go RAID 0+1 on the
database.

  Hi
  All,

  I
know that this question has been asked before so I apologise in
advancebut can't seem to find a solid answer anywhere. Here
  goes.

  What
would be the ideal disk config for performance and reliability? Money is
not an issue at this time. I am thinking:

  2 x
  9Gb RAID 1 for System
  2 x
18Gb RAID 1 for transaction logs
  3 x
36Gb RAID 5 for Info stores

Please let me know if I have got it completely wrong
as I need to recommend a solution soon andwould rather get it right
  first time :-)

  TIA

RE: Preferred Disk Config

I'd agree with this config generally, assuming:

1. We're talking Exchange 5.5, or Exchange 2000 with a single storage
group.
2. The 72Gb available on the RAID5 set allows enough room to run the
database utilities should you need to

RE: Preferred Disk Config

2001-09-26 Thread Kalemanis, George
Title: SMTP mail to exchange help

If money is not an issue, I would go
with:

2 x 9 GB RAID 1 for system

2 x 18 GB RAID 1 for transaction logs

6 x 36 GB RAID 0+1 for Database

RAID-5 is fine, but if you ever need to
restore a database it might take 5 times longer to write. Writes are awfully slow on RAID-5, and
0+1 will have an edge on all areas of performance with the protection of
mirroring. If you got the money, go
with 0+1, to save money use RAID-5.

We have a RAID-5 subsystem on one
server. I had to do a recovery on
it, because Dell had a bug in the Perc controller, corrupting the
database. After it was fixed, I did
a restore, and it took 4 hours for a 10 GB priv. I did the same store on a Compaq running
a 5300 controller and 0+1, the restore took 30 minutes.
