that's pretty effectivetake something technical looking to management,
and make sure the bit with the 'estimated cost of recovery' is in nice, easy
read tahoma with a BIG number on it, and you can guarantee they'll sort it
for you :o)

Internally - we just have the policy - can't really help you there with any
s/w or h/w. Externally - we have a scaled-down SMTP proxy now enabled on
the firewall (Watchguard appliance) which can filter on MIME type as well as
file extension for the Internet mail (in or out). This isn't bullet proof
for a few reasons including (1) some legitimate stuff comes in using a
generic MIME header (I'm told this is due to improperly configured or very
old e-mail client software) so we can't strip those off, but some crap can
also hide behind that same generic MIME type, and (b) MIME types are not
really as standard as they should be (there are sometimes some slight
variations that show up and get clobbered until we log them and add them to
the OK list). If a spreadsheet dies at the gateway because the MIME type is
application\ms-excel, and we've defined application/msexcel as the safe
type we catch this and add the additional MIME type. Seems ugly but in fact
but we picked up these few strays quickly and rarely see any roadkill now.

For this small amount of grief I can say that it has helped to block a lot
of crap at the perimeter. It works for us because we only consider very few
apps to be safe - anything other than docs or spreadsheets or pdf files is
generally not delivered to the users. If you allow a zillion different
types of apps then with all the variations in MIME this might be more
trouble than it's worth for you. It's not a solution - just another part of
the process of housekeeping.

Having said that, I should add that we try to apply the technology to the
junk coming in - as for the users internally we rely on a policy (no-one
opens, installs, runs, plays, saves any exe's or scripts or jokes or games
or whateverperiod). I'd like to have a bullet proof way to enforce that
internally - I don't. But in the case of someone deliberately acting to
circumvent that policy, I would pay a visit to management armed with my copy
of the policy and whatever evidence I have that the policy is being stomped
on, as well as a ton of information on the destructive power (and estimated
costs) that result from this kind of action in other locations. Let them
take it from there (evil vindictive #^$%@* that I am...)

If that doesn't work, there's always beer...

Sorry for the rant

The only thing that comes to mind is a decent Exchange Antivirus Scanner
with attachment blocking enabled.

It won't stop people from sending the file, but the Antivirus Scanner will
strip the file out of the message.

TrendMicro Scanmail for Exchange comes to mind (though others on the list
have other favorites)

The clear consensus on the list is to stear clear of any CA product.

Definitely. It's all too easy to change the extension of a file so it's
allowed through a virus scanner/mail management software when it shouldn't be,
and then renamed at the other end.

We
have a similar problem on our file server. We've prohibited people from saving

Hi there,
We are using Exchange Server 5.5 SP3 on a Windows NT
Server 4.0 SP6. Clients are using Outlook 97. Is there a way to prevent
users from sending attachment of a specific filetype ? For instance
*.mpeg, *.avi an so on ? Both internal and external mail.

Hello ... is this thing on ?? Antigen http://www.sybari.com/products/antigen_exchange.asp can do this for exchange. If someone sends
you an mp3 file or an exe and they rename it, it will still pick it up because
itchecks the attachments based on extension and file
  type.

Definitely. It's all too easy to change the extension of a file so
it's allowed through a virus scanner/mail management software when it
shouldn't be, and then renamed at the other end.

We
have a similar problem on our file server. We've prohibited people from
saving particular files, such as mp3, but they can all bypass it by changing
the extension of the file to .zip or .doc.

of
course, the one problem is that in abusiness environment, ZIP files are
rife, and inone sense good, because they keep the attachment size down for
work related material. The problem is that if a file is renamed THEN zipped,
you've got twice the battle. Can you really risk filtering all ZIP files and
losing business critical information to it?

Of
course, that said, it's quite possible to insert a file as a package in a Word
doc, so if someone really wants to get something in, and the person at the other
end knows it's coming, there's no easy way of stopping it. Even if your package
can look inside ZIP files and filter files from within them, all it sees is a
word document, and it goes straight through.

  of
course, the one problem is that in abusiness environment, ZIP files are
rife, and inone sense good, because they keep the attachment size down
for work related material. The problem is that if a file is renamed THEN
zipped, you've got twice the battle. Can you really risk filtering all ZIP
files and losing business critical information to it?

  Of
course, that said, it's quite possible to insert a file as a package in a Word
doc, so if someone really wants to get something in, and the person at the
other end knows it's coming, there's no easy way of stopping it. Even if your
package can look inside ZIP files and filter files from within them, all it
sees is a word document, and it goes straight through.

I
believe that antigen is aware of this trick and will still remove
it.

Definitely. It's all too easy to change the extension of a file so
it's allowed through a virus scanner/mail management software when it
shouldn't be, and then renamed at the other end.

We have a similar problem on our file server. We've prohibited
people from saving particular files, such as mp3, but they can all bypass
it by changing the extension of the file to .zip or
  .doc.

Your Exchange aware Antivirus SW should be able to
do this. What are you using?

Hi there,
We are using Exchange Server 5.5 SP3 on a Windows NT
Server 4.0 SP6. Clients are using Outlook 97. Is there a way to
prevent users from sending attachment of a specific filetype ? For
instance *.mpeg, *.avi an so on ? Both internal and external
mail.

RE: Prevent sending attachments

2001-10-31 Thread Wayne Hanks

I fail to see the point in doing this as the attachment will not execute in
the OS with an odd extension. As soon as the recipient runs the attachment
they will get an error message about the extension not having a valid
application registered.

I use Trend to do the trapping and write th attachments to a shared
directory on my machine. I've noticed though that if a virus file comes in
as an .exe, it is dumped on my machine without being scanned, and my Vet
antivirus then scans it and fixes the file. In other words, we are using
MAPI mode scanning and the attachment blocking occurs before the scanner
checks the message. Running Ex5.5 sp3 on nt4 sp6a

I suppose I'll have to get around to putting SP4 on at some stage but I'm a
great believer in If it ain't broke, don't fix it
cheers

it's a nice thought.it'd take a hell of a lot of doing thoughyou'd
be looking at opening every single attachment that comes through, and
analysing it to determine what file type it isCan't see that having a
good effect on performance...
