If your just installing a distribution on one computer I don't see how this is any easier than a normal installation. Although, it should make the installation easier for a new user.
Re: [expert] Mandrake 6.1b first impression
If it is a feature then it has been implemented the worst way possible. I invite you to look at Netscape.ad that implements the features you put in and more without sacrificing anything. I have been using it for months without any problems. It is available from : ftp://ftp.psychosis.com/netscape/ And while you are there checkout netscape-wrapper also. The wrapper is heaven sent for novices who keep clicking on the Netscape icon to start another copy of Netscape. You really should reconsider not including the broken implementation of cut and paste shortcusts. You are making a whole lot of people, who are not subscribed to this list to know the easy fix, download netscape all over again and install it. Major inconvenience. just for the record, i figured out what was wrong with ytalk. btw, thanks to all that replied (that being zero of you). ;p starting with RH/MDK 6.0 (which have newer versions of ytalk), you *cannot* use ytalk if the "talkd" daemon is enabled in /etc/inetd.conf. it needs to look like so: #talkdgram udp waitroot/usr/sbin/tcpd in.talkd ntalk dgram udp waitroot/usr/sbin/tcpd in.ntalkd technically, in.talkd and in.ntalkd are the same daemon. for some reason, ytalk freaks if both are enabled, yet reports it can't find a talk daemon when only talkd is enabled...go figure. i thought we had tried all the possible combinations of daemons, but we must have forgot to reload inet once. doh...anyway... so, that's the scoop. hope this will help someone out later in the archives. cameron ps - roger, i couldn't reach the ytalk homepage to see if a fix has been made or if the bug has been reported yet. thanks On Sat, 28 Aug 1999, Hrothgar wrote: :[1] summary: : : ytalk does not work. : : :[2] full description: : : ytalk hangs at the "Waiting for connection..." stage (on both clients). :to end the session, you have to suspend (^Z) and then `kill -9` the :process. : : :[3] versions: : : Mandrake 6.0 (Venus) : ytalk 3.1-3 : ytalk 3.1.1 [same result; went back to 3.1-3 rpm for support reasons] : : :[4] /etc/inetd.conf: : : talkdgram udp waitroot/usr/sbin/tcpd in.talkd : ntalk dgram udp waitroot/usr/sbin/tcpd in.ntalkd : dtalk stream tcp waitnobody /usr/sbin/tcpd in.dtalkd : # enabled dtalk just for good measure : : :[5] /etc/services: : : talk517/udp : ntalk 518/udp : : :[6] other info: : : we primarily need ytalk to work on the localhost; ytalk with a :remote host hardly ever happens (i'm speaking past tense here about our :prior setup with RH5.2). : : /usr/local/etc/ytalkrc is in place : : :can you reproduce this problem on your box(es)? it's almost imperative :that we get this working. any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: [expert] Telneting to the server
Hi! You're right, you have to install an X server on your windows box (you can find free or sharewares on the web). Then, just telnet on the linux server and run your application like this : appli -display :0 & Fred Sridhar G wrote: Hi, I would like to telnet to my linux server and execute X WIndow apps on my windows client. Re: [expert] Telneting to the server
Yes, you will need an XWindows emulator for your Win95 box. There are many out there. A widely used one seems to be Reflection X (from http://www.wrq.com). To use it, just install it on your PC, set your DISPLAY environment variable on your linux box to your PC's IP address:0 (123.123.123.123:0) and run your X app. -Original Message- From: Sridhar G <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Expert Mandrake List <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Thursday, September 02, 1999 1:01 PM Subject: [expert] Telneting to the server >I would like to telnet to my linux server and execute X WIndow apps on my >windows client. Re: [expert] Telneting to the server
Go over to www.tucows.com and go to the Server Tools / X-Windows servers. There you will find 3 servers. I haven't tried the second one as it doesn't seem to exist for NT. The first and the third allow me to use KDE, but I don't see the task bar at the bottom of the screen. The third looks more professional, but the time out after half an hour is more than annoying. MI/X is free and does the job. Start up the server on your Win98 machine. Now telnet into your Linux box. Log in as an unprivileged user. I can't login as root straight away, guess that's implemented for security reasons. Anyway, I don't think you need to be root to redirect X, which is what we want to do next. It can be achieved with the following command: export DISPLAY=1.2.3.4:0.0 you should substitute 1.2.3.4 with the IP address of your Win98 box now type xterm & and your launched. You can close down the TELNET session if you like. Hope this helps, Jo Sicher G wrote: > > Hi, > > I would like to telnet to my linux server and execute X WIndow apps on my > windows client. [expert] X - Monitors
I've asked this question once before, and was wondering if anyone has had the same problem. On my home PC I have a Diamond Viper v550 and a Viewsonic PT771 both are supported directly through X. However when I am in X my monitor never kicks into a Preset mode ex: P8 Vesa 800X600. It always goes into these user modes. Its fine but my monitor automatically saves the screen settings in the preset modes, but not in the user modes. Its a real pain in the ass every time I have it go into DPMS mode etc. Then it comes back online all screwed up. In windows it goes into a Preset mode for every setting, but I havent found any in X. I have tried screwing around with different sync ranges. Does anyone know what to try??? Regards, Gavin ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) ENTER.NET - "The Road to the Internet Starts Here!" [expert] Install cannot find filesystems
Hello all, My "filesystems" cannot be found by the Macmillan Linux-Mandrake 6.0 installation, right after choosing either "Disk druid" or "Fdisk". I don't choose the SCSI option since my hard drive is an EIDE Western Digital UDMA/66 (9.1GB, 7200rpm). I have Windows 98 working well on my primary DOS 4GB partition and I have two more logical empty partitions defined (2GB, 3GB) in my extended DOS partition. I install by booting from the floppy and installing from the CDROM. Any hint that could help me solve my problem? Thanks a lot! Marco Miller.

[expert] Mandrake 6.1b first impression
The 6.1b release looks great, works great, so far. I have encountered 2 problems only. 1. As I was trying to install over the network and have a 3Com 3c509 I could never get it to work. The card would get recognized but nothing else would work. Monitoring the network showed that the computer was actually sending out packets but wasn't getting any. I replaced the ethernet card with a Tulip card and everything worked. There is a small possibility that the card may be bad. 2. Netscape keyboard shortcuts are still broken. I could not believe my eyes. I thought enough people had complained about this one and Mandrake folks would fix this in the next release. But no, its still very much broken. Alt-o doesn't work and Alt-left and right do not work either. Other than the above two problems, it looks great. I guess I was expecting to see the new installer, but I didn't see it. So I guess it would not be going into this release. [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com
