LINK WORLD wrote: > Internal Modem support in Linux is not presently available. Internal has nothing directly to do with it.Virtually all external serial port modems will work. I believe external USB modems will work if your version of Linux and MB support USB, though I haven't tried any yet. Very few internal PCI modems work. You're best off with an ISA modem, non Plug and Pray. Many can have PnP disabled and IO/IRQ set by jumpers. The problem is that most manufacturers save a few dollars by eliminating some of the processing hardware in the modem, forcing that work onto your CPU. And they consider the software to drive the resulting product a trade secret. Its just not practical to try to reverse engineer it to be able to make your $50 or whatever CPU do the work of a $1 chip. 56K internal hardware modems start in the $40-$50 range. I paid $50 for one last month. I've paid as little as $20 at CompUSA before I knew the difference- just got lucky. If the box says Win modem, soft modem, lite, HSP,HCF, anything like that, stay away. If it lists Windows 95,98 or Pentium in the requirements, ditto. If the box says it will work in DOS or Win 3.1 that might be the real thing. Sorry, I made a typo. I meant GFCC. That stands for GTK Firewall Control Centre. Its basically a front end GUI to manipulate the rules that you have set up for IPchains. Re: [expert] Specific setup for Mandarke 7.1 and cablemodem to mediaone.net
Regarding the cable modem setup, check yo make sure that either pumpd or dhcpd are installed. In linuxconf, click netowrking, basic host information. Configure eth0 as your external interface: hostname: localhost.localdomain Adapter1: enabled, DHCP netdevice: eth0 Kernel module: (your Network Card's driver) Click accept In Name Server Specification (DNS) type the default DNS ip addresses. I don't know what these are for mediaone, but if you have a dual boot system with Windows, when you get connected, you can open a DOS prompt, and type ipconfig /all. this should list the DNS, or nameserver ip's. This should be enough, unless something else has been configured incorrectly. > - Original Message - > From: "Jeff Hoffman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Thursday, August 31, 2000 7:57 AM > Subject: [expert] Specific setup for Mandarke 7.1 and cablemodem to > mediaone.net > > > > Looking for the specific set up for connecting Mandrake 7.1 to a cable > > mode via dhcpcd to medaione.net. > > > > I believe I have the cards recognized but the settings under network set > > up are not designed to be understood from the Windows world winipcfg... > > Anyone have a working config they could send? Re: [expert] Specific setup for Mandarke 7.1 and cablemodem to mediaone.net
Just a note: If you are dual booting with windows, and don't connect through the "external interface" to another windows machine, or a Novell network, you should disable the IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols. They aren't compatible with the internet, and if your protocol list is as you've listed, Windows is trying to use the first three protocols before it even gets to the TCP/IP attempt. This will slow down your outgoing requests (Windows try a protocol, if there's no response, it goes to the next, and so on until it gets a good response). If you don't connect to a Novell network at all, get rid or the IPX/SPX protocol altogether. If you have a windows based LAN connected to this machine, you can keep the NetBEUI, but make sure you disable it on the outgoing NIC. --Greg - Original Message - From: "Charles A Edwards" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > We are having a run on DHCP question on both list. > Using DHCP the only thing that you will be able to do is share an internet > connection. > > In Windows my NIC has the following Bindings >Internet Connection Sharing (protocol) >IPX/SPX-compatable Protocol >Net BEUI >TCP/IP > And in Advanced it is set to Auto-Detect > > As to the Linux side during the Mandrake installation when it asked if I > wished to configure a Network I selected DHCP. [expert] /bin/mail and From: envelope sender
Hello, all: I want to use /bin/mail to transmit mails generated by an application; but I don't want them to be from the user that executes the script (since that e-mail address is invalid; the machine is behind a firewall and doesn't have a true FQDN). I have already configured sendmail.cf to change the domain name, but that's not good enough. I need to specify the complete originating address. I have read through the man pages for /bin/mail and I have scoured the net for some time, but no luck yet. How do I masquerade the sender as someone else using /bin/mail? Assistance on this would be very appreciated. Very. =) -Stephen-

Hi, I'm using mandrake 7.0, there is a bug in this version when you try to use a NFS file system exported by a solaris box. For instance, it's impossible to compile C++ code with linux on a NFS file system. This bug is reported in the mandrake bug database with number 465 and 466, is there a fix for this bug ? Actually, those lines should go into the file /etc/rc.d/rc.serial (which is sourced from rc.sysinit). rc.local is not run if the system boots into runlevel 1, and runs at each runlevel change when talking about levles 2-5. By putting the lines in rc.serial, the modem is configured to work even when you boot into single user mode, and is a valid device when kudzu does it's little detection thing when levels 2-5 start. -- Anton GrahamGPG ID: 0x18F78541 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> RSA key available upon request You will pay for your sins. Submitted 01-Sep-00 by Yosuda: > said Linux and BSD havent support for internal Modem...is that true > ???.. Absolutely not. More than 90% of ISA internal modems and a small but growing percentage of PCI modems are "real" modems and are fully supported under both Linux and *BSD. As far as detection goes, most internal modems that are supported do not use the irq's that linux automatically assigns to them (3 and 4). As a result, you need to determine this information, and put it into your configuration file. -- Anton GrahamGPG ID: 0x18F78541 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> RSA key available upon request What no spouse of a writer can ever understand is that a writer is working when he's staring out the window.

Running the basic > stock services that > Mandrake 7.1 sets up. It may have been a portscan. If you're running all the standard services that LM7.1 sets up, then you're probably quite exposed. Cut back to the bare minimum and make sure that insecure services like telnet etc. are not accessible via the DSL link. I couldn't find any docs on this, but in /etc/inetd.conf you can restrict the interfaces on which inetd services will run by using a syntax like this: localhost@telnetstream tcp nowait root/usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd myhost@telnet stream tcp nowait root/usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd This will allow telnet access only when connecting to the loopback address, or to the ip address that myhost resolves to (not your DSL address!). If you haven't got some good ipchains rules in place, that should be your next stop. ipchains can be configured so that it will log any offending packets, and I use Psionic logcheck (http://www.psionic.com) to keep me appraised of all interesting events in my log files. I had the same problem, and I did figure it out in the end (damned if I can remember now though!), but I later realised that using route to block attackers is not the best option that you have with PortSentry. You'd be better off to configure PortSentry to use ipchains rather than route as that will drop all packets from the attacker as they ARRIVE rather than blocking the response. In /etc/portsentry/portsentry.conf (well that's where mine is anyway) change the KILL_ROUTE setting to look like this: KILL_ROUTE="/sbin/ipchains -I input -s $TARGET$ -j DENY -l" It's much more secure than using reject routes, and much easier to remove in case of an error :-) HTH Tony

I want something which i can put in a script! ifconfig - or, if you'd like to have the pure ip for scripting try: export LOCALIP=`ifconfig ppp0 | grep inet | cut -d : -f 2 | cut -d \ -f 1` or if you have ISDN export LOCALIP=`ifconfig ippp0 | grep inet | cut -d : -f 2 | cut -d \ -f 1` the use 'ping $LOCALIP' or whatever.. Re: [expert] Installing Mandrake 7.0 with Matrox 220... Blank Display...
press Ctrl-Alt-F1 .. that should take you to a text cosole.. basically that combo will always take you to the first text console assuming you are in X. to kill X do Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace If you are getting blank display and can't do nethign about it, then at LILO prompt say "linux 3".. this will take you to runlevel 3 which means X won't start by default.. thus u'll endup in text console.. now login as root, play with X configuration, say startx and see if X works.. once you have X working, just say init 5 and u'll be on u're way to X login!.. and next time u reboot, it'll auto go to u're working X login :))) -sarang
Re [expert] pppd dying unexpectedly
Bring up a console window, type man pppd Maybe set 'crtscts' or 'cdtrcts' or check if it is set wrong Check the idle variable, mabe it's just timing out? Not sure how you set up pppd to run, you may not have all the variables set right.
Re: [expert] Cannot Telnet
Are you tring to telnet and login as root? Linux dosn't let you do that for security reasons.. login as another user and then su to root. Else, check the file /etc/services It has all the services that your machine has open.. If you have set the security level to highest in mandrake, then it'll disable telnet.. you can only get in by using SSH. Lemme know if you need help in setting up ssh.. its pretty straighforward! Else, if you have telnet uncommented in /etc/services, then do " /etc/rc.d/inid.d/inet status" and see if its running.. inet basically starts services mentioned in /etc/services.. if its not running then simply say "/etc/rc.d/init.d/inet start" and you should be ok ! -sarang
[expert] Installing Mandrake 7.0 with Matrox 220... Blank Display...
Hey, I know this has to be something simple I am missing here, but I want to install Mandrake 7.0 on another machine, however only Red Hat 5.1 will install (I haven't tried newer versions of either dist.) Is there a key combination I can hit to get to the "Textmode" ? the manual for mandrake is pretty much useless in this instance. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Dan.
Re: [expert] Cannot Telnet
Quick and dirty Fix: Should only be used until you figure out how to properly set hosts allow and hosts deny Etc. Etc. (I mention this only because I haven't yet myself) pico /etc/pam.d/login Then find the line that says "securetty.so" (Usually the second line from the top.) Comment out this line from the beginning of: #auth Save and telnet. Please note if this machine is conencted to the 'net via dialup or on a lan without a firewall you are REALLY leaving your butt hanging out the car window, during rush hour in Los Angeles.. :) L8r.
