[expert] Are there any Audio CD Player using digital Extraction

2001-06-24 Thread George Abdo

Hello All,

Recently, I asked why can't I get audio when I play an audio CD on a Compaq
Presario 5000, and it was answered by Tim Dreessen when he suggested that the
audio is not connected to the CDROM.

I contacted Compaq to ask where the adio pins on the motherboard are (built
in audio), and their reply was that there are none! They said I should be
using Windows because it uses digital audio extraction.

Sorry for the long intro, but does anyone know of a Linux CD player that uses
digital Audio extraction. I am not looking for a CD ripping app. I just want
to listen to CD when I'm working.

Thanks
George

Re: [expert] icons disappered

2001-06-24 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

You can try to rebuild the kde desktop. If I suppose the problem appears with
a user named user1 do that:

open a terminal as user

su -
Password: (root password here)
rm -r /home/user1/.kde -f
exit

Then login as user1 and let kde rebuild.

This was a help for Civileme to me, because after runing gnomba in a kde
desktop there were some icons absent and other doubles. That worked for me
fine.

You could try the update-menus script. It fixed a similar problem for
me, once after installing a new version of KDE, and again after
installing some software. This was back when I was still running 7.2

I friend of mine said that the only problem for him to migrate from windows

 Hi,

I can not make java work in konqueror, when I load an
applet it seems that it displayed outside the
konqueror window and dissappeared quickly. The applet
area in konqueror window remains blank. If enable java
console, no error message given. I install JDK 1.3.0
from Blackdown Java and use the real path
 /usr/local/j2sdk1.3.0/jre/bin/java in konqueror
 configuration and install jsse to
 /usr/local/j2sdk1.3.0/jre/lib/ext

What should I do? Thanks in advance.

[expert] xinted make dependency problem?

2001-06-24 Thread Karl Cunningham

I'm trying to compile xinetd without tcp-wrapper support. But I made the
mistake of compiling it the first time with libwrap support. After that,
make doesn't seem to do anything productive.

running:
# ./configure --with-libwrap
produces the following output:

[lots of discarded lines]
checking whether to use libwrap... no
[lots of discarded lines]

# ./configure --without-libwrap
produces the following output:

[lots of discarded lines]
checking whether to use libwrap... yes
[lots of discarded lines]

So it appears configure knows what I want. But when I run make, it doesn't
recompile any sources or relink. The object files and executable are not
rebuilt.

If I remove all the object files to force it to recompile and link, all is
ok.

I'm new to this. Am I missing something?

Thanks
Karl Cunningham

To change the default handler for html/urls you can do the following.

If you are using kde open Kde Control Center and nav to the listing
File Browsing/File Assoc/Text heading/html.
Using the Add option add opera (be sure to use lowercase o) and then move it
to the top of the list.

If you are using Gnome open the Gnome Control Center
Document Handlers/Url handler.
In the listing for default handler remove Moz and enter opera (lowercase 0).

All shortcuts and links will now be opened by Opera.

As far as Java working in konqueror as long as you have a Java pkg
installed, JRE or
JDK, and you have enabled java in Preferences there should not be a problem
unless
the site does not use the standard format.

after you do a new ./configure you need to do a make clean and then make,
that will delete all the old object files.

Re: [expert] bash_profile and /etc/profile don't work?

2001-06-24 Thread Praedor S.Tempus

Hello.
Yes I did do an export. It is prepended to the path statement in my own
.bash_profile AND it is in the path statement in /etc/profile.

My .bash_profile statement starts: export PATH=PATH:/usr/local/BMRT/bin:...
etc. If I do this same thing from the commandline, it works and for that
session my BMRT directory is known. Reboot and it is lost. I also tried the
path.sh trick as described. Didn't work. I created the file, made it
executable, placed it in /etc/profile.d and rebooted. So...with all the
following I am still missing my desired additions to my path when I run env:

PATH in /etc/profile contains /usr/local/BMRT/bin and it starts with
export. My personal .bash_profile contains the same path statement
addtion. And finally, an executable placed in /etc/profile.d named path.sh
with the same path export statement all still fail to change my environment.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

Somewhere on this infernal box is a path statement which is setting it up for
me and all users. I cannot find it - I would like to change it so a few new
directories are in the path for all users. It used to be /etc/profile which
contained the penultimate path statement - but no more. Apparently,
.bash_profile doesn't serve any purpose (on my box at least). I have to
manually do an export desired path from a CLI to get it to change but
then, it is ONLY for that session.

The easiest/cleanest solution is to create a /etc/profile.d/path.sh,
  which contains your path statement.

I guess I'm concerned that with this release, the quickest cleanest way to
do a lot of things is to deviate from the standard. One of the strenghts
of Linux is that everything is where you expect to find it. Mandrake
changing things around is a bad thing. Linux should be Linux, if you want
to shield the user behind a dummy proof screen, cool; but on the other side
of the screen should be the text files we have grown to know and love.

A possibly silly question for Praedor S.Tempus, did you export the PATH?

Hello,

I had setup a pc with LM 8.0. I am trying to use postgresql in it.
When I try to connect to postmaster and create a new database, through
psql it works fine. But if I try to use pgaccess to create new database
it gives the following message.

Tcl error executing pg_exec create database

is not a valid postgresql connection

I have tried the trick of changing a line in /etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql

su -l postgres -c /usr/bin/pg_ctl -D $PGDATA -p /usr/bin/postmaster
start /dev/null 21
to
su -l postgres -c /usr/bin/pg_ctl -D $PGDATA -p /usr/bin/postmaster -o

as suggested by David Joham

Still I am getting the same message.

Please can anybody help ?
