What if you boot into X directly (runlevel 5)? Will the command in rc.local work then? Maybe not. I wonder how to script a login session. Maybe then you could run startx and then run your program. -- Stephen On Wednesday 27 June 2001 04:11 pm, Mike Rambo wrote: > David Joham wrote: > > You can always put in custom startup information in /etc/rc.d/rc.local. > > > > Would that solve your problem? > > > > David > > I've tried everything along that line that I can think of. [expert] xtraceroute doesn't work
I had xtraceroute-0.8.14-20mdk installed with Mandrake 8.0 but it wouldn't work. I then upgraded my glibc to 2.2.3 and xtraceroute to the cooker version 0.8.14-21mdk (I didn't upgrade glibc just for this). It still doesn't work. What happens: I run "xtraceroute" from a konsole as superuser (same thing happens if I run it as user) and for a brief moment I get a window appear for a new trace but before it can become usable, it vanishes and I am left with this message on my konsole: Found a hosts.cache with 0 entries. BTW I am running firestarter for the firewall since I am not familiar with iptables syntax, I've also tried using InteractiveBastille with no luck, after spending 30 minutes anwering questions IP masquering was not working. Re: [expert] kernel: VFS: busy inodes on changed media.
Yeah, I've noticed that as well and it's annoyed me enough that I actually got off my lazy arse and modified my /etc/fstab. It had the same cdrom entries as yours, but I just went back to the old way and stuck this line back in: /dev/hdc/mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto 0 0 It doesn't automount, but I'm not a big fan of that anyway and I usually disable it pretty early on. If I understand correctly you want to upgrade RPM itself (perhaps you're seeing errors of being unable to open packages because your version of RPM is too old??). According to info I found a couple months back on mandrakeuser.org you need the version of RPM that shipped with mdk7.2 to update mdk7.1. [expert] Linux Fragmentation -- Is the Unthinkable already here?
Dear friends: "If Microsoft were to cook up a plan to cause Linux to disappear in a virtual Tower of Babel it could scarcely be more effective than that which has been adopted by distributions on their own, voluntarily." This is from an article by Dennis E. Powell in Linuxtoday (June 27, 2001) (www.linuxtoday.com) entitled "Separated by a Common Operating System". What do our experts (and newbies) think? If this is true, then is Linux not in deep trouble? A longer quote from the article follows: " This column started out in the hope of comparing Progeny with SuSE; that fell apart when I realized that Progeny's take on things, inherited from the Debian to which I understand it remains true, is just too different from the RPM-based-distributions' way of doing things for me to learn it in a short time. What I went on to discover, though, is that the lumping together of RPM-based distros really can't be done, either. They are beset by incompatibilities such that they might as well be different operating systems (with some exceptions for people who compile their own stuff, presuming that they remember to install the -devel version of everything, which is also ridiculous). Knowledge of one distribution has little to do with any other distribution. This sort of thing occasionally results in indignant howls, as when Red Hat shipped gcc-2.96. Usually, though, it goes largely unnoticed. But it has its effect, and that is confusion among prospective users. Not long ago, if you got a Linux distribution you got Debian, Slackware, or something else, and the something elses were largely interchangeable as to what they installed -- the differences were in installation and configuration tools, the newness of the stuff included, and what applications were provided. Upgrading was fairly simple, because an RPM for one would probably work for all. And Linux desktop use grew." "Now incompatibilities are being introduced hand over fist, as distributions fight for a bigger and bigger piece of a diminishing pie, until oneday one will own all of nothing. Does this do anything useful for the distributions, users, Linux, anybody? Well, no. TIA for any help > you can provide. In short: rpm -qa|grep 'SVGA' #comes up with the name of the rpm-file rpm -e name-of-the-rpm-file Now you have deinstalled the SVGA server. Now put in your Mandrake CD (can't remember number 1 or2) (if you don't use supermount you'll have to mount the cdrom) cd /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS # for the 1. CD cd /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS2 # for the 2. CD ls *FBD* # comes up with the full name of the rpm-file rpm -ivh name-of-the-rpm-file Now the server is installed. 3 more things to do: 1. Alter your lilo.conf in the line it asks for the vga-mode: vga=791 # this is for a nice frqamebuffer mode on a 1024x768 screen 2. After deinstalling the SVGA server your link /etx/X11/X points to nothing rm /etc/X11/X ln -s /etc/X11/X /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_FBDev # sets the link again 3. Alter your XF86Config This depends on the monitor you have, the default resolution and colordepth you want to have. In the easy case you just have to change your section "Screen" so that where before was "Driver SVGA (or something)" you type "Driver fbdev" Again, this is it in short terms. I did that on an IPC notebook with a SiS chip. Before I had problems to setup X and when I finally succeeded every time I switched to text console from X the machine froze and I had to reboot(!). Now, with the FBDev it runs very fast and smooth. wobo -- GPG-Fingerprint: FE5A 0891 7027 8D1B 4E3F 73C1 AD9B D732 A698 82EE For Public Key mailto [EMAIL PROTECTED] with Subject: GPG-Request --- ISDN4LINUX-FAQ -- Deutsch: http://www.wolf-b.de/i4l/i4lfaq-de.html

[expert] LILO (or grub?) issues
Hi: I have had LM 6.1 running for some time and I finally decided to install LM 7.2 on a second disk, while keeping LM 6.1 on the first disk. What is now left is to tidy up things so I can keep booting into either version until I am satisfied that I can do away with LM 6.1. My current setup is as follows: LM 6.1 is on hda (/ is on /hda3) and LM 7.2 is on hdb (/ is on /hdb6). Since the installation of LM 7.2, I can only boot into 7.2. However I have a boot diskette of LM 6.1 so that, if I want to, I can simply boot into 6.1. Before doing some irreversible things, I thought I would check things out first. So here are a few quick questions: 1) During the install I was never asked to choose between LILO or GRUB. In fact I have both a lilo.conf and a grub/menu.lst file if that means anything. However I prefer using LILO since I am somewhat familiar with it. How do I know which boot loader was used during the installation? There is no LILO prompt as there was on LM6.1 (rather I see "stage1 stage2" before a menu appears), does this mean grub has been used. If that is the case I guess I can still run LILO with an appropriate configuration file? Subquestion here: when I do an fdisk /dev/hdb and look at the partitions there is an asterisk (*) in front of the boot partition (/dev/hdb1). I thought I had asked for installation on the master boot record, not on the second disk boot partition. (Thinking now about it, I think I toggled that asterisk myself when I partitioned the disk before installing LM7.2). Anyhow if I run LILO again with boot=/dev/hda, do I need then to toggle that asterisk off? 2) Supposing I can use LILO, I would like to modify the appropriate lilo.conf file to be able to boot into either LM6.1 or LM7.2. I see no problem in running lilo in either my 6.1 or 7.2 system, however there are some points I would like to clear before doing this: a) The global parameters in either lilo.conf file (both files are listed at the end of this message) include the following: map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b keytable=/boot/us.klt message=/boot/message The directory /boot is different between the LM6.1 and LM7.2 systems. How do I deal with this? Or do I simply ignore it? I looked at the /boot directories and the relevant files are clearly different (different sizes) and, in one case, the file us.klt is inexistent (under LM 6.1). Is it a matter of just using it as is and, no matter from which system I run lilo, it will just work as long as the image files can be found!!! b) As for the image files, I suppose it is only a matter of mounting the "foreign" disk and its boot partition so that it can be seen from whatever system (6.1 or 7.2) from which I am running LILO. 3) Minor question: what is this "menu-scheme" line and what use does it have? 4) Is there an installation log kept somewhere? I would like to have a look at it. 5) I did a "complete" installation and yet emacs is not there. Is this normal? Sorry for the lenght of the message and thanks for any help (however minimal it may appear to you), Serge Pineault This is the lilo.conf file created after the LM 7.2 installation on hdb * boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b default=linux keytable=/boot/us.klt lba32 prompt timeout=50 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux root=/dev/hdb6 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label=failsafe root=/dev/hdb6 append=" failsafe" read-only other=/dev/hda1 label=windows table=/dev/hda other=/dev/fd0 label=floppy unsafe * This is my lilo.conf file for the LM 6.1 system * boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b prompt timeout=50 other=/dev/hda1 label=win table=/dev/hda image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.13-7mdk label=linux root=/dev/hda3 read-only

[expert] Printing is slow with CUPS
I've finally managed to get my systems printing through a shared CUPS printer, but it takes about 5 minutes for an e-mail message shorter than this one to print from Mozilla. Also, stuff in the 'Options...' window of qtcups always resets to localhost, even though I have to put in the IP address of the print server for it to actually print. [expert] NIC Help
I have a Toshiba Satellite 2805-S402 that seems to be having problems with its built-in NIC under Mandrake 8.0. Everything works OK for a while, but then I start getting the following messages: eepro100: wait_for_cmd_done timeout! eth0: Transmit timed out: status 0050 0c80 at 6488/6516 command 200c000 It's a brand-new model that was released AFTER M8.0, so I'm not too surprised that there seem to be a couple driver issues, but this one is starting to annoy me, as (currently) the only way I can successfully download something larger than 1-2MB is to sit at a console window and restart networking everytime I see the first error message. Any recommendations? Update an RPM? (which one?) Make some changes to /etc/modules.conf? Post some additional information? Anything? - Theo

RE: [expert] Network sniffing, how?
I'll bet you are a lucky person! When I received my first cable modem, I only saw activity when I was on it. Powering down my machines resulted in no activity on the lights. Later I had to exchange the unit with another. After that I started seeing a lot of activity with no machines powered up. The Cable modem can communicate to a specific "node" at the remote end dependant upon the frequency (channel) selected to carry signal. ISP's frequently break up the load by putting groups of people, or areas on specific channels. It may be that you are in a sparse area, or a channel that is as of yet private to you. Try running IPTRAF and put it into promiscuous mode. Look for other machines on your subnet. [expert] hostname questions
I am about to re-configure a simple Class C network of Win98 machines/Linux server to give the Win machines access to the internet. Andy, I have a similar setup, and the CDs would only play from the CD ROM not the DVD ROM. It was suggested to me that the cd player is pointing to the wrong driver (/dev/cdrom) while CDRW are installed as /dev/sda# I did not proceed with this as my Compaq motherboard does not have an audio input for CD sound :-( Try a config file for the CD Player software.
