Or you could go the LDAP route. I'm trying to set that up right now,

LDAP has some security advantages over NIS, as well as some functional

they're certainly not going to want to attempt LDAP.. :)

NIS is easy.

RE: [expert] Spamassassin + CommuniGate Pro config

2003-01-11 Thread Brian York
Thanks.
Are you using this setup?
I also need to know how scaliable spamassassin is. Will it handle 20,000
users at around 30 emails a second. Keep in mind that their will be a virus
scanner, communigate using their webmail for around 15,000 of the users,
2,000 using pop or imap and the other 3,000 are forwarded to MS
exchange(including myself and I hate it too, but once someone sets it up you
get locked into It big time. It's the heart of communicatios so there isn't
much that can be done except upgrade when a new version comes out.)

The OS is RedHat Advance server (RHAS) (I know this mandrake but the redhat
mailing list sucks). The box will be a dell poweredge 6450 with Quad Xeon
Processors @ 2GHz and 16 GB DDR SDRAM(not purchased). One question is if
anyone knows about the clustering for RHAS would it be possible to use
smaller system (poweredge 2650)and a NAS for storage. With say 3 of them
with dual processors, would you get more avaliablity and power for less
cost? I don't know if you can do that with communigate but just a though I
had instead of putting on a big box and then having a redundant server (not
quite as beefy)

Thanks

RE: [expert] users with same permissions as root

2002-12-22 Thread Brian York
If you make all the root passwords on every machine (17 linux machines) you
are asking for more trouble than my way because if an unauthorized user
gets the root password then they can shut down everthing. Were I work we
have 83 machines (linux, VMS, windows) the root/administrator password is
different for each and VNC password is different. Brush up on your security
before you start telling people that they are asking for troble.

And another thing I don't know what you affiliation with linux is and how
you use it but when you login to a server it is for superuser type
activities any way. Its not you typical browse around to see whats on it or
experiment with new commands.

Sure, they should always log on with their usernames, but they shouldn't
have root privileges unless they su to root.

Normal user accounts don't have root privs for a very good reason. You
shouldn't even trust yourself with root privs on your user account. If
your admins can't remember the root password, they shouldn't be
administering the system, IMHO...

Make the root password for all the systems the same, rather than upping
unprivileged accounts to superuser status. You are just asking for
trouble, IMNSHO.

that's kinda defeating the whole purpose of root. there would be no
difference between giving them the root password and you all having the same
access as root under your logins. Your best bet is to NOT give them access
under their logins and make them use root.

Sounds like you're a winNT/2k/XP admin. they're good for that.

When i leave college in a few days i will also be leaving this wonderful T1

it may make my home network not work as smth as it did with XP (note: not
prasing M$ at all)

The nice XP to XP to XP to XP thing:
over x-mas break i had all 4 comp using winXP 1 server and 3 clients (i know
xp isn't servre software but follow me on this, hehe) With a xp server it had
the nice dial up gateway set up were you could share access to all the comp
to be able to disconnect and connect to the internet with out having to go to
the server and do it.

My prob:
Is there anyway to add a linux computer in to the network and have the same
convenience as if i was using XP (being able to disconnect the net connection
on the server from my linux box)

I don't want to change there server to linux because it took my parents a week
or so to fully under stand how to login in to xp. The word linux just would
scare them. It would be fine if we the internet on all the time but we only
have one phone line.

Anyone got any idea maybe a little progam that someone has wrote that will do
this or maybe some of you coders could make a little program that would do
what i need (i'm not a programmer)

IDE0 and IDE1 (hda to hdd). That's all there is to
 it. You will need
to retain your existing slower hda drive for
 booting.

[expert] Restricting Resourse Usage

2002-04-24 Thread Brian York

Is their a way to restrict the amount of network and other resource
usage that a user on a remote computer can use?

Reason: I am on a lan at my college and i share 30 GB of music and 10 GB
fo software. During a typical day i can be sending 500KB/s of data. I
would rather this be around 200KB/s because it kills my connection and
can slow down my hard drive (only one HD would be fine if i had another
one). for my shares i use a guest account pcguest so reduing resorce
usage is only going to affect people connected to me to download music.

Thanks
Brian

[expert] Security level config

2002-04-24 Thread Brian York

When you install a fresh copy of LM 8.2 and you set it to 'higher'
security through the installation you can get different sequrity options
for the users and for the system. When i tried this a few weeks back i
could not login directly as root (sure that was because of the
configuration) so i reinstalled with the 'high' security option. The
higher had some aspects that i liked about it. When i changed it after
the install with the 'high' security i changed the security level to
'higher' and with normal users could not list or read files from
directories other than the users home. Thats the second thing that i
didn't like (first was not being able to login as root) how can i
customize the security level to disable feature that i don't like?

Thanks
Brian
