Re: [expert] ATA/66 HPT366 with 7.1

2000-06-09 Thread Dan Bélisle

What i don't understand is that Denis from mandrake tell me that his test
with the HTP366 is good and work. But, if the patch is not apply, how he can
work for his and not for me ?

I have already read the UDMA66 Howto, but is not working...

Thanks again !

Danny.

The Mandrake kernel doesn't ship with the IDE patch included. Suse
developed the patch but it is still somewhat buggy. The other distros
still hesitate to use it.

Check out this link:
http://linux.nf/stepbystep.htm
click on the Ultra66 link.

Those links will explain how to install Linux onto a drive that's connected
to an ATA66 controller.

Hope that helps,
Matt

Pentium code tightens timing requirements on the drives
themselves and on the chipsets on the motherboards as well. 386
code allows much greater variance from specifications.

If your drive is Western Digital or your motherboard is one of
several chipsets made to accommodate the WD drive and its weird
timing and the fact that it blows off the CRC, then you have a
problem with hardware and will be bound by it to distros who use
386 code. That is the difference--Mandrake is pushing the
envelope in the direction of rather exact conformance to
specifications on the part of the hardware, while compiling to
maximize processor performance, and a lot of sloppy hardware has
been built assuming the laxity of the 386 code which is used in
the dominant desktop system. Now those same folks are saying
things like "we don't support linux" when they get tech calls.

The "We don't support linux," answer is easy to give, apparently
a lot easier than the redesign to build the drive or motherboard
right the first time.

won't work otherwise. BTW I am running NT4.0 on a WD20.5 G HDF and

Should have given the actual driver for Linux as
http://www.highpoint-tech.com/ide.2.2.15-17.2405.patch.bz2
BTW this is unzipped in linux using bzip2 -d ide.2.2.15-17.2.patch.bz2
and
then use the regular patch installation routines for your version of
Linux.
