Re: [expert] Re: Sharing files on @home network.
@home is about THE worst service out there, not by speed, but by their way of running the service. They change the T.O.S. at will and are complete nazis about any kind of server you may run. Even game servers. Basically their terms are this "Unlimited usage of our service for $39.95, but don't use if for ANYTHING or be ghestapoe style 'offered' our atrocity of a buinsess plan." I feel sorry for all @home users. Luckily in most areas that @home is, you can get DSL. I highly recomending going that route. BTW, their 'buisness plan' they make you take, or be banned for life should you run any kind of server thinkable (even napster!) , is $995 setup and $439/mo for 5mb downstream and 256k up stream. That is just sick.
Re: connection speeds--was: Re: [expert] X or console wont start
On the cable modem, I can get 300k/s downloading speed because it is rated at 10mb downstream. DSL is always rated at kbits like any other internet connection. - Original Message - From: "Bill Shirley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, April 30, 2000 5:44 PM Subject: RE: connection speeds--was: Re: [expert] X or console wont start > This has been my experiance. All that is in there, but even in sndconfig I get the modprobe error, or rather it doesn't work. [expert] Sound Problms witn 7.0_2
I am of course using SBlive! value edition, and I had spent about 3 hours getting it to work on mandrake 6.0 and 6.1. I got pretty good at doing it, but now, in 7.0 I can't get it to work no matter what I do. Any suggestions? It seems to have automatically detected the card and "installed' the drivers, but when you do modprobe you get an error. Thanks for your help, Jason
[expert] Here is one for ya...
I just installed mandrake 7.0_2 and I had 6.0 power pack in before. My question is this, what happened to my telnet server? It seems to have dissapeared. Yes, a stupid question. But, I can't imagine a linux distro without a telnet server. Thats just sacrelige. Thanks, Jason Turner
Re: [expert] You people just don't get it
Dude, get a grip. Everyone is a novice at some point in time. If you would get off your high horse for a second and realize, maybe these 'novices' are coming to the expert board for expert advice. Learn to live with it. Don't be a whiny topic nazi. Otherwise this board may just not be for you. -Jason - Original Message - From: "John Aldrich" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, April 12, 2000 9:41 AM Subject: Re: [expert] You people just don't get it > On Wed, 12 Apr 2000, you wrote: > > > > What I meant is that novice users use the distro too, and they are not > > so smart in figuring out, > > what is not working correctly...And that is... > > > MY question is, what the heck would a NOVICE be doing > setting up a server If you're a NOVICE, you should call > in an expert to help you set it up, or to set it up FOR You > and show you which switches to pull and which buttons to > push for what effect. > John

Php4 is soon to be in RC stages from what I have been hearing on the msg boards. About this Mandrake 7.0, I am disapointed, much of what was released was nearly still in beta form. Sure, keep the standard packages, but I think recomending ceartain programs would be a good idea for the new linux user, and the advancement of linuxs' popularity.
[expert] Anyone been able to get their cable modems to work?
I use @home for my cable modem service. How do I connect to them? it seems no matter what I set the thing to, it doesn't work. Has anyone figured out how to get DHCP to talk with their DHCP servers yet?
[expert] Any ETA for linux kernal 2.4 yet?

I have tried all of those drivers, but to no avail. To clarify, is your banchee AGP too? The card I have is Creative Labs as well. Could you send me brief instructions on how you did it? - Original Message - From: alann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, September 30, 1999 4:18 PM Subject: Re: [expert] Here is a dumb question. > Eosnet Team wrote: > > > > I recently purchased an AGP voodoo banchee card (upgraded from a diamond > > viper PCI card) and I can't for the life of me get it to change resolutions > > above 320X200 and 16 colors. [expert] Here is a dumb question.
I recently purchased an AGP voodoo banchee card (upgraded from a diamond viper PCI card) and I can't for the life of me get it to change resolutions above 320X200 and 16 colors. It's almost as if it ignors the mode setting all together. I have tried all of the drivers out there and none seem to work. Does linux not support AGP with the current kernal?
