[expert] LM8.0 rpmdrake behaviour
Hi, everyone. I am just wondering about something that is going on with rpmdrake. My boss just came by asking about the effect the fetchmail update might have on a problem that we have with kmail. (email with attachments get lost in the aether when sent by kmail, but work fine when sent with mutt.) Anyway, I told him that I didn't think fetchmail was installed since when I did the updates this morning (fetchmail and xinetd) only xinetd came up to update. Just to be sure, I did a 'rpm -q fetchmail' and got fetchmail-5.7.4-5mdk as a result. I was sure I did not see this this morning, but maybe the server wasn't updated when I got to it, so I started rpmdrake (as root) and hit reload lists. Nothing new came up. So I switched over to the install side and looked for fetchmail there. Listed as installed was: fetchmail5.7.4-5.1mdk fetchmail5.7.4-5mdk fetchmail-daemon 5.7.4-5mdk fetchmail-daemon 5.7.4-5mdk fetchmailconf 5.7.4-5.1mdk fetchmailconf 5.7.4-5mdk So I have the rpm command telling me one thing, rpmdrake telling me two things, and I am still sure that I did not apply the fetchmail update this morning. Are there two separate databases for packages? Is there any danger in mixing the update methods? Thanks, Jason Chaffey [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[expert] Does the Software Manager Work?
Hi, everyone. Has anyone been able to use the Software Manager to update packages in LM 8.0? I am able to install packages from the installation CDs, but whenever I try to add a source for updates, it gets ignored. That is, when I hit Reload lists only CD 1 and CD 2 get analysed and not the online resource. I have tried the Security Updates, ftp and http types of sources, all with the same results. I have also tried it with machines that have been upgraded and machines with fresh installs. The only clue I can provide is that when I run rpmdrake from the command line I get a bunch (150) bad format errors, e.g. compssUsers.flat: bad format I know there are updates (nedit and gftp, for example) but I can't see them with rpmdrake. Have I forgotten something? Thanks, Jason Chaffey Bedford Institute of Oceanography
[expert] Kmail, attachments and using a relayhost
Good day to everyone. The problem: My boss has been trying to send email with attachments (postscript files, image files) but when he does, they disappear. No error messages are received, but the recipients do not get the messages either. Without attachments, mail is delivered normally. The situation: The machine is a 1.1 GHz Athlon box with Mandrake 7.2. All the updates have been applied through MandrakeUpdate. KDE 2.1 has been installed by rpm. Kmail is being used, along with postfix. We administer our own network of about a dozen Linux machines. We are behind an institutional firewall administered by the Informatics group. I have set the machine to masquerade as the institutional domain and have to use a relay host in order for mail to get through the firewall. Mail without attachments work fine, but with attachments the mail disappears, both locally and outside the firewall. According to syslog, the mail was sent, but it was never delivered. e.g. Mar 26 08:22:16 greenbergd postfix/smtpd[23993]: connect from localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1] Mar 26 08:22:16 greenbergd postfix/smtpd[23993]: 8047D7D25: client=localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1] Mar 26 08:22:16 greenbergd postfix/cleanup[23994]: 8047D7D25: message-id=[EMAIL PROTECTED] Mar 26 08:22:16 greenbergd postfix/qmgr[800]: 8047D7D25: from=[EMAIL PROTECTED], size=5226 (queue active) Mar 26 08:22:16 greenbergd postfix/smtpd[23993]: disconnect from localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1] Mar 26 08:22:16 greenbergd postfix/smtp[23996]: 8047D7D25: to=[EMAIL PROTECTED], relay=mail1.mar.dfo-mpo.gc.ca[142.2.12.122], delay=0, status=sent (250 Mail accepted) Mar 26 08:22:16 greenbergd postfix/smtp[23996]: 8047D7D25: to=[EMAIL PROTECTED], relay=mail1.mar.dfo-mpo.gc.ca[142.2.12.122], delay=0, status=sent (250 Mail accepted) I have tested mailing attachments with mutt and had no problem getting through the firewall (or locally), so the problem appears to be with kmail. Has anyone else experienced this and (hopefully) have a fix? Or tell me what I set incorrectly?
