[expert] Xircom Modem/Network PCMCIA card
I am running Mandrake 8.1 and am attempting to install a Xircom combo Modem/Network Card: Xircom "RBEM56G-100BTX" [According to http://www.xircom.com/cda/page/0,1298,0-0-1_20-476,00.html this uses the Linux driver "XIRC2PS_CS" (see also http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ ] With the computer (new Dell Inspiron 8100) turned off I inserted the card, then rebooted the computer. The boot startup completely froze at the stage "Checking for new hardware". Here is complete log of everything from the screen: - Checking for new hardware [ OK ] To use Backward Compatibility with ipchains for kernel 2.4 Use: /sbin/modprobe ipchains Starting pcmcia:[ OK ] cardmgr[765]: watching 2 sockets Setting network parameters: [ OK ] Bringing up interface lo: cardmgr[765]: executing: 'modprobe cb_enabler' cardmgr[765]: executing: 'modprobe serial_cb' - [this is where it froze] Any hints what I do now? -Jerry Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] 8.1: hand calculator?
Where is the "hand calculator" for Mandrake 8.1? I'm using KDE. Both kcalc and xcalc (which I used to use in earlier versions of Mandrake) are missing. Moreover, although I got a copy of kcalc from the web, when I attempted to install it there was a conflict between a library it needed and the Mandrake 8.1 installed /usr/lib/libmng.so.1. Any hints? Surely I shouldn't need to start a spreadsheet to get a simple calculator. - Jerry Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[expert] disk repartitioning (after Windows XP)
The new computer I just bought has Windows XP. I'd like to re-partition my (20 GB) hard disk keeping most it for Mandrake 8.1. Does the disk re-partitioning software that comes with Mandrake 8.1 work with a disk originally formatted for Windows XP? Note: Partition Magic has a new version 7 for Windows XP, claiming some incompatibility for earlier versions. Thanks, Jerry Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] MandrakeUpdates - command line version?
Is there some command line equivalent for MandrakeUpdate? It would be very useful for a remote system I take care of, particularly for security updates. - Jerry
[expert] Mandrake 7.2 cannot mount my CD
I am attempting to update from Mandrake 7.0 -> 7.2 (Powerpack Deluxe). As usual, I made a bootdisk and ran it -- but it could not mount my SCSI CD (although it seems to have recognized that it is SCSI). The error message is: "I could not mount a cd on /dev/scd0" This surprises me since I've been running various flavors of Linux on this same computer since 1995 and the bootdisk has always recognized and mounted the CD *automatically*. [My bios doesn't allow booting from the CD]. For the record, when I run dmesg with my current Mandrake 7.0, the CD part reads: - Detected scsi disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Vendor: PLEXTOR Model: CD-ROM PX-6XCSRev: 1.00 Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 6, lun 0 scsi0: Target 0: Queue Depth 28, Synchronous at 10.0 MB/sec, offset 15 scsi0: Target 6: Queue Depth 3, Synchronous at 5.00 MB/sec, offset 15 Uniform CDROM driver Revision: 2.56 - [I have one SCSI harddisk and one IDE harddisk. There is no hardware change since I got Mandrake 7.0 last year.] Any hints? This must be simple. -Jerry
[expert] Nvidia drivers .96 for Mandrake 7.2?
Nvidia's page: http://www.nvidia.com/Products/Drivers.nsf/Linux.html has new drivers (Jan. 18). However they list only drivers for Mandrake 7.1: Mandrake 7.1, one CPU, uniprocessor kernel: NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-6.mdk71.i386.rpm NVIDIA_GLX-0.9-6.i386.rpm Mandrake 7.1, SMP kernel: NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-6.mdk71smp.i386.rpm NVIDIA_GLX-0.9-6.i386.rpm Will these same drivers work for Mandrake 7.2? If not, how should one proceed for Mandrake 7.2? Jerry
