[expert] Errors in /var/log/messages on LM7.2

All,

I'm seeing a lot of these messages in my log on an older LM7.2 machine.
There have been a very few updates to this machine in a long time. Can't
find anything real useful on Google about the message though. And ideas?

It would be great here on my Thinkpad T20 if it supported my wireless

Hi Darcy,

I use McAfee here on my LM72 file and mail server, however I don't really
expect it to catch email viruses since that's not what it was really designed
for. In this case I use it primarily to scan the filesystem in case one of my
Windows machines has become infected and is storing viruses on the server. Of
course since I am running McAfee on the Windows clients as well, I haven't
had a problem yet!

[expert] Keyboard Problems with X and LM80f1

2001-07-22 Thread John LeMay

Hi all,

Could someone point me in the right direction to determine why certain keys
on my 101 key IBM keyboard (the big one - PS/2 style) do not work?
Specifically, keys like home, end, the arrow keys, and some others do not
work most noticably in Netscape.

I've checked in XF86config-4 and had to change the keyboard def from 105 key
to 101, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Civilme did a good job explaining a lot of what a good admin should know and
do. The important thing to remember is where to go to find the appropriate
info if you don't recall it immediately. This is true no matter what you are
supporting.

Knowing how to really *USE* man pages and search engines is much of the
difference between a good administrator and a not so good one.

Another point is that while you may not remember all of the switches for a
given command - ls is a perfect example - you will probably find that you
will remember many of them in the format that you find them most usefull.
Some examples for ls that I use daily include ls -l, ls -Rl, or ls -al. I
rarely use ls without using the -l switch, so it's easy for me to remember.

Like coding, you will tend to associate "blocks" of characters with a given
task. For example, how many times did you have to read the "rm" man page
before learning that "rm -rf /" is a bad thing (most of the time)?

[expert] Looking for Wireless Support

2001-07-17 Thread John LeMay

All,

Does anyone have any info on when we may see support for the 3Com AirConnect
(Spectrum24) wireless network adapter built into a 'Drake distro? I just
installed Freq1 on my Thinkpad and I'm looking at the driver for the Spectrum
(at it's Sourceforge home). It doesn't look hard to integrate, so I may give
it a shot.

Just curious as to when we could see an out of the box solution.

BTW, I was quite impressed when lilo was automatically configured to also
boot my existing Windows 2000 partition.

I was looking for an easy way to do this and never found it. What I've
resulted to doing is to leave the account with no password (by deleting the
password field in /etc/shadow). This forces the user to set a password at
next login.

[expert] theme-selector-applet still Segfaulting with LM7.2

2001-06-10 Thread John LeMay Jr

I've rerolled my machine back to LM7.2, however I maintained my home
directory. Just like in LM8, the Gnome theme-selector-applet causes a
segfault as soon as it is selected.

Could someone point me to what file – most likely in my ~/ - may be causing
this? I've tried doing an ls -Rl >> out right before and one right after
attempting to use theme-selector-applet and comparing them with diff, but I
haven't been sucessful in figuring this out. I've also tried mv'ing

I was on with Gnapster last night myself, so it seems to be working here.
You could try logging in a few times - Napster uses dns round robin for

that may not happen the next time you try.

[expert] Newbie Question

I'm actually not a newbie, and this is embarrasing to ask, but here
goes. I added the following to /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

However env does not show this var as being set after I login. Why???
Shouldn't this var now be set for every user unless it is overwritten by
something like the user's .bash_profile?

Re: [expert] Switch Hub

1999-11-15 Thread John LeMay

This is an extremely poor and technically incorrect explanation, however
I understand what the writer was attempting.

Full duplex is defined as the ability to transmit and receive data
simultaneously. Half duplex is defined as the ability to transmit or to
receive data at any moment at time.

Telephones are typically full duplex. Even if you talk while the other
person is talking, you can hear that other person. You may not
understand them, but you hear them. Simple two-way radio systems such as
CB or common ham radios operate in half duplex mode. When the microphone
is keyed, the receiver is automatically disabled. This prevents the user
from destroying the front end of the receiver, amongst other things.
More sophisticated two-way radio systems such as cellular phones and
some systems used by emergency services personal operate in full duplex
mode.

In the networking world, network adapters are capable of transmitting
and receiving data simultaneously in a switched environment. In a shared
environment, such as that where a hub is utilized, the ability is
disabled primarily to minimize collisions.

Re: [expert] fax (fwd)

By "typical" I meant that once the data was collected (ie who to send
the fax to, the number to dial, the cover sheet to add, etc) that it was
most likely nothing more than could be done by lpd. Therefore, we need
someone with some programming knowledge to check out the data stream
sent by a Winfax client to a Winfax server and (a) replicate this stream
in a Linux app and (b) put together a gui that can capture a print
stream from a Linux app, setup all the fax info, and shoot it to the
Winfax server.

Re: [expert] Making a new kernel?

1999-11-08 Thread John LeMay

You make no mention of actually moving the new kernel from
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot to /boot, but I assume you did that. I do
not believe make mrproper or make clean are necessary any longer. Don't
forget to run /sbin/lilo after you edit /etc/lilo.conf and move the new
kernel. The steps:

make xconfig
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
mv /lib/modules/current /lib/modules/modules.old
make modules_install
vi /etc/lilo.conf
mv /boot/bzImage /boot/oldimage
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage
/sbin/lilo

Reboot.

Haven't tried 11x7, but 8.5x11 works well in color and b/w.

Have you tried inserting a final "return" or "enter" after the last

[expert] Mandrake 6.1 rev of libpthread-0.8.so questioned relative to IBM JDK

1999-11-06 Thread John LeMay

The following exchange has popped up in ibm.software.java.linux, the
group for info about the IBM JDK rev 1.1.8. Could anyone explain this
huge difference in file sizes? Perhaps it will help with some of the
compatibility issues with the JDK and Mandrake 6.1 which are not
apparent in a RedHat 6.0 and JDK enviro.

=
Thanks for the insight. I'm wondering what Mandrake 6.0 has done to
libpthread-0.8.so. The RedHat 6.0 lib is 235,419 bytes and the Mandrake
6.1
lib is only 79,218. Whoa! I've tried it here, and it has helped greatly
reduce
the SIGSEGVs (w/o JIT) and hangs (w/ JIT) on Mandrake 6.1. However, I
agree
"Use at your own risk."

[expert] Dump of some sort - kernel 2.2.12

1999-10-30 Thread John LeMay

Since a system "crash" Friday, I've been trying to restabilize my box. I
just noticed the error below in my messages log. Thought someone may be
able to provide some insight as to a meaning. I'm hoping it leads to the
real problem here! (I posted another message captured earlier today
regarding the same problem, different error though.)

Quick background - system is a PPro 200, 128M RAM, running Mandrake 6.0
with updates and kernel 2.2.12. I accidentally sent a sigterm to X on
Friday hanging the box completely. Upon reboot, I noticed several errors
regarding deleted inode's. asclock seemed to have disappeared - no trace
of the binary. Since then, the machine has been dumping out of X and
hanging itself completely with no notice and no errors in the logs.

This message comes about an hour or so after I completed a restore of
/usr and a couple other dirs. The system had been error free prior to
Friday.

Netscape will tend to freeze when it is trying to resolve a hostname. I
see it immediately upon starting Netscape. Once the drowser is up I
typically start Messenger by selecting Communicator - Messenger. I get
as far as clicking Communicator, then nothing for about 10 seconds while
the query kicks off my dod ISDN device, the connection is made, and the
nameserver responds. After that I'm usually good as far as

I'd try the tulip diag tool on Don Beckers site first. He has some great

Been using 4.7 here under Mandrake 6.0 since it was released (4.7, that
is). Only time I have it quit is when I'm "doing java" or occasionally
when I login to a secure site. Never happens twice, though. That's a

I have no clue about the color issue (unless the default setup of X
misdetected your video adapter and/or monitor), but as for the
sluggishness of the apps problem, does the kernel see all of your
memory? Try typing "free" at a console and see how much mem is reported.
(Of course I realize this is a problem that was fixed back around 2.0.34

I have been running on an Adaptec 2940 series with a Quantum and a

Terminate the devices if you can, if not enable auto-termination on the

just the auto on the card.

Typical SCSI rules apply - keep the faster devices (drives) at the top

be ID2. Tough. It works! ;)

Re: [expert] SCSI Emulation for Burners

David,

While a better explanation would have been helpful, I'll shoot from the
hip.

su to root and cd to /usr/src/linux (hopefully you installed the kernel
source!)

execute 'make menuconfig' or, if you are running in X, 'make xconfig'

Under "Block Devices", enable 'Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/floppy
support'

Below that enable 'SCSI emulation support'

Back at the main menu, save and exit. Now recompile. In case you are new
at that...

make dep
make bzImage(bzImage is the most compressed option, AFAIK.)
make modules
mv /lib/modules/ /lib/modules/(replace "current" and
"old" with whatever your modules are)
make modules_install
edit lilo.conf (if necessary)
mv /boot/ /boot/
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage (assuming you are
running on x86)
/sbin/lilo

Reboot.

I seem to have narrowed down my problems with my HP Laserjet 4+
significantly. It appears that enabling the duplex option on the printer
(menu - printing menu - duplex = on) has an adverse effect on the
ability of the printer to process form feeds. I would assume the printer
must be stripping these in some fashion to enable the duplex feature.
Either way, after disabling this feature, things seem better!

Has anyone else seen this? Has anyone found a workaround? Is anyone
interested in fixing it?

Thanks!

[expert] Samba and printtool: Mandrake 6.0

1999-09-06 Thread John LeMay

Can anyone tell me why printtool complains that Samba is not installed
upon startup (of printtool)? I am running Samba 2.0.5a and it is
installed in it's default /usr/local/samba. This was not an rpm install,
it was compiled locally and installed.

I found this very problem to be a major obstacle when I migrated to
Mandrake 6.0 from RedHat 5.1. I put "xhost +machine_name" in my .xinitrc
file (I only use a single account on this machine - at least relative to
X.) and all my problems went away.

I seem to have a problem updating as well, but not exactly the same.
Wu-ftpd seems to be a problem. If I attempt to update this package, I
receive errors indicating incompatabilities with BeroFTPd.

Re: [expert] Printer Problems with 6.0

1999-09-05 Thread John LeMay

This seems to have fixed most problems here - I also had to recreate the
queue because my apps didn't seem to want to take a parameter passed to
lpr regarding the print queue name.

One issue remains - if my users print to the printer from Win machines
via Samba, paper ejects properly, including the last page. When I print
from the local Linux box, the last page (or only page) never ejects. I
have enabled EOF in printtool, but this feature seems broken. I can
uncomment the lines in the filter which will append the eof to the job,
but this effects my Win users as well and ejects a blank page at the end
of their docs. Is this a known problem or am I missing something? This
always worked in RH 4.x and 5.0/5.1.

Re: [expert] Power failure, Mandrake failure, dead ?

1999-09-05 Thread John LeMay

While I agree a UPS is the way to go, the original post from this user
stated that in his opinion, Windows handled loss of power better than
Linux and that if he needed to have a UPS because Linux didn't take well
to having it's lifeline cut (aka AC), Windows would be an overall
cheaper solution. Please note I do not agree that Windows is any better
in this situation. After rolling out several thousand NT boxes, I know
just how well NT handles power outages. It doesn't. Win95/98 may be
better in this respect, but who wants to run Win95/98 when you can run
Linux?

Just checks those files (actually they are in lp0, not lp here) and two
of the files - general.cfg and postscript.cfg - define the papersize
variable as "letter". See below:

PAPERSIZE=letter

That's the only "clue" I found!

Re: [expert] setting up printers?

The simplest way is probably to use the gui tool, printtool. You can
access this either directly or from the control-panel application, but
you need to be root to add a printer either way.

Ever since upgrading from RH 5.1 to Mandrake 6.0, I have had print
problems with my HP Laserjet 4+. When I attempt to print from Star
Office 5.x, or Netscape 4.61, or WordPerfect 8, the printer displays a
message asking me to load A4 paper. I am in the US and we use "letter"
size paper, which is what I selected in printtool when I setup the
printer. I have attempted a "clean load" of the OS - reformatted
everything
and tried again, but I have the same problem.

Also, it is necessary for me to manually form feed the printer to eject
the last page of print jobs, even though I've enabled the EOF feed in
printtool. It is interesting to note that I have this printer defined in
my smb.conf file and none of my Windows machines have a problem printing
- those jobs autofeed fine. I'm including the printcap file below. Any
help would be greatly appreciated!

The 6.1 cd image is in the neighborhood of 650 Mbytes, as I recall. The
"tree" needed for installation probably isn't that much smaller. Not
really something you want to download. You could always grab a cheap 6.1
cd from www.cheapbytes.com.

I was going to suggest getting the newer driver. Mandrake 6.1 shipped
with version 1.0 of the 3com driver for the late 905b and the 905c, but
version 1.1 is available from 3com now. Note this driver replaces

Re: [expert] fax

I have a request, since we are talking about fax solutions for Linux. I
would like to see a fax client for Linux capable of working with a
Winfax Pro 9 fax server. Since this works as the typical "print driver"
format of fax client/server, I'm sure it wouldn't be too be of a chore
for a skilled developer to come up with a gui and get the print stream
correct.

Re: [expert] realtech 39 fast eithernet card

Cisco isn't exactly known for delivering hardware that can perform at
line speed. Throw an Extreme, Foundry, HP, or something decent in there
and drive it with a Netcom or Ixia box (instead of application traffic)
and you'll see a big difference. 100 Mbps full duplex can potentially
deliver 200 Mbps - 100 Mbps in either direction.
