Re: [expert] not enough arguments for update-menus
No, the -v in update-menus just tells it to be verbose, it doesn't change what it does. i am not sure what is going on here -BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK- Version: 2.6.2 mQCNAzc5/rwAAAEEALGi/cKupURWMeRs3xKx7+3PHi1hqfswOuM5suJhTEJZiR+p xYsVYB/B/uNwrr+m+Rzd8sEJlB2D/JkkCHMUplDR2OC0hfUYmQGIXEg9kShudRsO E+1oVFFevj6MTgIY6c5nSWvz3n+zLHrcHk/k8pLDpI6qcIGqrAEcX2GVzVwNAAUR tARqb25vtBU8am9ub0BwaHlzaWNzLnViYy5jYT4= =fDxR -END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-
[expert] not enough arguments for update-menus
hi, i tried to run update-menus, after installing kde2.1 but i get the following error message Not enough arguments for mkdir at /usr/bin/removekdesysmenu.pl line 42, near ""${kdehome}/share/applnk/$file")" Execution of /usr/bin/removekdesysmenu.pl aborted due to compilation errors. the line in removekdesysmenu.pl is just mkdir ("${kdehome}/share/applnk/$file"); i have done an export $KDEHOME="$HOME/.kde" so not sure what argument is missing, unless it is $file. i have also made sure that there is a link from /usr/share/applnk to /usr/share/applnk.kde so it should get $file. anyone know what is going on? i have a hybrid mandrake 7.0/7.2/other install thanks, j -BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK- Version: 2.6.2 mQCNAzc5/rwAAAEEALGi/cKupURWMeRs3xKx7+3PHi1hqfswOuM5suJhTEJZiR+p xYsVYB/B/uNwrr+m+Rzd8sEJlB2D/JkkCHMUplDR2OC0hfUYmQGIXEg9kShudRsO E+1oVFFevj6MTgIY6c5nSWvz3n+zLHrcHk/k8pLDpI6qcIGqrAEcX2GVzVwNAAUR tARqb25vtBU8am9ub0BwaHlzaWNzLnViYy5jYT4= =fDxR -END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-
Re: [expert] LILO problems
Thanks John, but two problems with that...Mandrake doesn't seem to include the System.map there (It just has a nice "Dear Mandrake user" letter). However, I am able to get the old System-map from the kernel rpm. The problem is that I copy the map to /boot, and then run lilo, and lilo overwrites the old map with a new map file. This new map file is what I think is causing lilo to stop at LIL- (it may also be boot.b) If I don't run lilo before rebooting, then lilo still stops at LIL- rg > /usr/src/linux/System.map - cp to /boot and you should be set. > > John LeMay > Jr. Senior Enterprise Consultant > NJMC, LLC.
[expert] LILO problems
i've been running mandrake 7.0 for some time, and after fooling around a bit, managed to mess up lilo. lilo now stops booting after typing out LIL- which apparently means that the map file is corrupted or the geometry is wrong or something like that. The suggested fix is to rerun LILO, which i do, but to no avail. So now, I can only boot from a floppy. another fix may be to copy a map file from somewhere, but i don't know where to find one. (I cannot seem to copy the map file from the floppy, because when i mount it, i only see the single bz image called vmlinux2.2.14-15mdk) (besides, i was running vmlinux2.2.14-15mdksecure) also, using the "linear" option doesn't seem to work. using a grub boot disk didn't help either... any suggestions? my /etc/lilo.conf file looks like this: boot = /dev/hda1 map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b timeout = 500 linear prompt vga = normal root = /dev/hda5 read-only image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdksecure label = linux image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.0 label = test my /boot directory contained a bunch of different maps files eg. System.map, System.map-2.214-15mdksecure my original set up from mandrake did not contain an /etc/lilo.conf file and yet lilo always booted fine (i guess using the defaults). Here is how i screwed things up (i am not sure what step actually messed things up, so here are all of them). 1) the system was perfect...so i began to fix it 2) i decided i wanted to upgrade from the 2.2.14 kernel to the 2.4.0 kernel 3) before doing anything, i checked that my boot floppy worked (although i don't know how, i suspect that this is what caused things to get messed up) 4) after compiling the 2.4 kernel, and modules, i copied the bzimage to the boot directory. 5) i then rebooting the system, but did not tell lilo about the new kernel, because i wanted to make sure that things were still okay 6) it is possible that before rebooting, i ran linuxconf, and looked at the lilo configuration (which was empty), but i didn't change anything (perhaps linuxconf decided to do something anyway?_ so, i have managed to run into problems, and i haven't even run the new kernel yet any help would be appreciated, as i have been fiddling with lilo and pulling my hair out for some time on this. thanks, jonathan
Re: [expert] test
anyone know how one gets on the digest version of the list? the help command doesn't give me much, nor the lis command in terms of instructions. j
Re: [expert] remote xwindow : help needed
i don't know if this helps at all, but i have a similar problem, and the cause might be the same. if i su to root, and then start kfm as root, then i get the root's kde desktop on top of my desktop. not sure how to prevent this, but i assume it is a bug in kfm. this problem seems only related to kde running on a local host. you might want to post to the kde list, or check their archives. j On Wed, 26 Apr 2000, Hans Schneidhofer wrote: >hi, > >I've discovered a seldom behavior with remote xwin. Re: [expert] Sound Problms witn 7.0_2
did you use the program sndconfig to configure? (just type "sndconfig" as root) if that didn't work, try installing the driver from www.opensource.com (they have half-decent instructions) you probably tried these already, but i have a SBlive, and 7.0 and both methods seem to work, although the later method gives the latest version of the sound driver (it seems that some of the versions have not been so great). j On Thu, 13 Apr 2000, Eosnet Team wrote: I am of course using SBlive! value edition, and I had spent about 3 hours getting it to work on mandrake 6.0 and 6.1. It seems to have automatically detected the card and "installed' the drivers, but when you do modprobe you get an error. Re: [expert] can't open display under ppp
thanks jon, yes, i would have thought that ssh would take care of this, but it isn't. i tried both of your suggestions, and still get: Xt error: Can't open display. i would have thought that ssh would change $DISPLAY, but i need to do this manually. i have noticed that my local .Xauthority file still reads: localhost.localdomain0MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 i would have thought that ssh would do something to this file, and perhaps this is the problem. jonathan On Mon, 3 Apr 2000, Jon wrote: Sounds like you need to use "xhost" to allow the remote machine to access your X display. When you ssh in, X11 forwarding is normally setup through ssh itself. Try doing "xhost +remote.machine.com" on the machine you want to allow connections to, then opening up the X app. Of course, why not just use ssh, like: ssh -f whatever.phys.ualberta.ca xmaple This will work well, and is more secure... [expert] can't open display under ppp
I am able to get ppp running, and i am assigned a local IP address dynamically. I can run netscape locally and things like that, but can't get a remote server to open up an x window on my local machine. (I get the "can't open display" message") i ssh over to a remote server. i can, if need be set the display (i use bash) to the local IP address I've been assigned by typing DISPALY=xxx.yyy.zzz.ww:0.0 before I ppp, I type (on my local machine) "hostname " and i have the line "ALL: .phys.ualberta.ca" in my hosts.allow file (where .phys.ualberta.ca is the domain name for the remote server) but when i type "xmaple" for example (after establishing an ssh connection) i get "can't open display" is there something else i need to do to tell the remote machine how to open my display? thanks! jonathan
