[expert] Mandrake 6.1 & nfs lock daemon

2003-07-01 Thread Marsden MacRae
Our aging server is running Mandrake 6.1. we've just discovered we need
the package containing the nfs lock daemon. Naturally we found this out
well after Mandrake stopped supporting 6.1 and took the packages down.
We have the original CDs but it doesn't seem to be on them. 7.1 nfs
packages aren't compatible as they changed the way nfs works between the
versions.

I don't suppose you have any ideas where I might find a mirror of old
Mandrake stuff, do you? I'm goggling away here and not having much luck.

Thanks for any help.

While we're talking about this, is there a way to configure the
addresses of the video ram?

How do we do it if we don't use DrakConf? I'm a command line kinda guy.

Because most email clients are text based, and reading html formatted
mail is either impossible or takes extra work. In certain clients,
receiving html mail fills the screen with junk and makes us grumpy.

I appreciate your efforts, and have to apologize for not being able to

[expert] remote logoff

2001-02-06 Thread Marsden MacRae

Hello Experts!

Ran into a problem yesterday which I hope you can help me prevent in the
future.

I called in sick, and naturally a user came up with a KDE problem that
required my personal attention. I stumbled blearily into the office and
fixed it, but left without logging off of my workstation. Now, when my
users make this faux pas they are required to pay me by buying me a
drink (fortunately, my beverage of choice is Diet Coke). On the other
hand, when *I* do it, I buy the office donuts.

Yesterday I figured out I'd failed to log off after I got back home, but
couldn't figure out how to do it remotely. My systems are available
remotely via ssh. So, o great experts, is there a command that boils
down to "logoff user dimwit"? Or a particular process I could kill?
(pointers to man pages greedily accepted)

My fellow workers are busily chowing down on my fine. Help prevent
obesity! Thanks!

Funny y'all should mention it.

There's some controversy going on around our office about email clients.
Basically, we need a new email client that will handle imap/ssl or apop.
We have both Mandrake Linux and windoze boxes. We were discussing
Eudora, but there's apparently no version of Eudora for Linux. Netscape
handles imap/ssl, but I don't have the expertise to set up the system (I
need to learn one hell of a lot more).

Any ideas? Recommendations? Pointers?

I know from zip about Opera. Where should I look for info?

Thanks!

[expert] Re: CE: 810 chipset and sound

2001-06-14 Thread Marsden MacRae

Dear Terence
Thanks again for your continued attention.

Well, well, well, you're never gonna believe this!

We got sound working on most of the Mandrake Linux boxes with this
chipset and audio controller. How did we do it? Bryan Howard editted

/etc/rc.d/init.d/sound
and
/etc/rc.d/init.d/usb

He removed all references to conf.modules and replaced them with
modules.conf

We rebooted and voila, sound!

Please, oh please, oh please make a note of this, post it in your
archives or something, for the next poor sucker who has the 810 chipset
AC '97 controller on a Mandrake Linux box.
