[expert] LM 7.0 loses the clock setting

2000-02-03 Thread Mohammad R. Salehpour, Ph.D.

Hello,

I have LM 7.0 installed on my notebook computer. All of a sudden I
noticed that when I boot the clock which is displayed on the KDE
panel is 5 hours behind EST. I set it then on reboot the same thing.
I thought maybe the internal clock battery is going bad. But when I
enter the BIOS setup at startup, the cock is correct, but it changes
when it boot into linux. And it is off exactly 5 hours. I did set it
back in the DrakeConf. But on the next reboot it is back by 5 hours.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

GMT is universal time. I need to figure out a way to tell that the
hardware clock is not set to universal (or GMT) time but instead to
the local time. A work around could be to actually set the hardware
clock to universal time then on boot LM 7.0 takes that time and
subtracts 5 hours and I will be ok, except this a dual boot machine
and Win98 is taking the hardware clock to be the local time.

Any ideas?

Best regards;

[expert] [SOLVED] LM 7.0 loses the clock setting

2000-02-04 Thread Mohammad R. Salehpour, Ph.D.

Well, finally I solved it, or found a work around to the clock
problem. In /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit there is the following line:

CLOCKFLAGS="--hctosys"

I changed that line to say:

CLOCKFLAGS="--hctosys --localtime"

This would tell the system that the hardware clock is set to local
time and there is no need to convert it to local time.

I hope this helps others.

Hello all;

I understand that Mandrake 6.1 is due to be released soon (if not
already). I just bought my copy of powerpack 6.0 two weeks ago. Does
anybody know if MandrakeSoft has any upgrade policy or I have to pay
another $50 to purchase the the new and improved version?

Thank you

Hello all;

Just an update to my previous post about mandrake support. I am glad
to report that I did receive answers to my e-mail to mandrake
support. And unlike Microsofts technical support answers, they were
all correct and worked.

Thank you Mandrake support.

[expert] FTP installation of Cassini

1999-09-09 Thread Mohammad R. Salehpour, Ph.D.

Hello all;

I am trying to do an FTP installation of 6.1b. Everything goes ok all
the way to the point that says "loading the second stage ramdisk".
Then it terminates and gives the message

"can not create /modules/modules.cgz Read only file system"
"install exited abnormally"

Since it did retrieve the ".../base/stage2.img" correctly but could
not load it correctly into the ramdisk space, my guess would be that
the stage2.img is corropted! Am I right?? I did try two different
mirror site with the same result.

Re: [expert] Why are bugs not fixed ?

1999-09-13 Thread Mohammad R. Salehpour, Ph.D.

Harald;

I do undrestand your frustrations. When one likes something or loves
it (as we all do linux) one get frustrated to see little bugs are
lingring here and there. But we have to realize that most people who
work on linux distributions do not do it for financial rewards. It is
more a labor of love. So please be patient with these guys and do not
call them names.

How often do we get speedy bug fixes from Microsoft??

Happy linuxing.

[expert] .ram files and KDE

1999-10-08 Thread Mohammad R. Salehpour, Ph.D.

Hello all;

I have installed RealPlayer G2 on Mandrake 6.1. Everything works as
far as I can tell. I have however decided to have my .ram files
defined so when I click on the in KFM, KDE automatically start
RealPlayer and run the file. I have defined the global mime types and
associated global application. Now when I click on the *.ram files,
RealPlayer starts but just sits thjere and does not execute the file.
If however I select the run dialog and ask kfm to run the file with
realplayer it works.

Has anyone done anything similar? What am I doing wrong?

Thank you.

[expert] New Mandrake Kernel is SMP only

1999-11-08 Thread Mohammad R. Salehpour, Ph.D.

Hello;

I just downloaded the updated Kernel 2.2.13-22mdk. However this seems
to be a "SMP" version. I checked there is another one on the FTP
server which claims that it is SMP (2.2.13-22mdksmp).

But they booth boot with a banner which proclaims they are both SMP.

My OpenSound module fails to load claiming that I need a SMP version
of OSS. When I downloaded the SMP version from www.opensound.com,
I'll get the message that my kernel does not have loadable module
installed.

Any Ideas?

Thanks.

[expert] FTP installations

1999-12-26 Thread Mohammad R. Salehpour, Ph.D.

Hello All, Happy Holidays;

I got a new computer and decided to install Mandrake 6.1 via FTP. So, I have
downloaded the netboot.img and PCMCIA.img files created the floppies. When I
start the installation everything is fine the site is found and the initial
files from "base" directory is retrieved. Then; when it is trying to create
the ramdisk it crashes with a message like this:

Unable to create modules/modules.cgz: because the filesyetem is read-only.

What is going on? I tried several sites with the same result. Any help would
be appreciated.

Thank you.

[expert] LCD Panel Blinking (second Try)

Hello all;

I have send this message few days ago. For some reason it did not
make it. So here it is.

I have installed LM 6.1 on a notebook computer which has a Trident
9397 video controller. The LCD panel blinks every 30 seconds or so.
When I am in Netscape it blinks 1 to 2 times a second. So bad that it
requires a reboot. Any suggestions?

Thank you.

[expert] PCMCIA modem and LM 7.0

2000-01-19 Thread Mohammad R. Salehpour, Ph.D.

Hello all;

I have a notebook computer with PCMCIA slots. I have also a viking
modem card. When I had the LM 6.0 installed everything worked fine. I
could dial out with KPPP and have no problem. I installed LM 7.0 on
the same computer. Now KPPP does not see the modem. I tried
/dev/ttyS0-3. I get either modem doesnot respond or the modem is busy.

So I reinstalled LM 6.0, and modem works fine. I reinstalled LM 7.0,
it does not work.

Does anybody have any idea as what is going on.

By the way, pcmcia daemon is functioning properly since my ethernet
card works fine when I use the laptop in the office.

Thank you.
