WhoopsSorry about that Oscar, lots of times I am wrong 

what happens if you replace the ATZ in the init string with AT&F   ?   
that should reflush and go with a good string?Maybe?well you 
may have a idea already about the validity of my advice  but give it 
a try ...?

I had this same problem last year óscar ..the PPPD and the modem is 
working...the trouble is with authenication with the ISP...look to 
etc/ppp/options
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets

or pap if you use that

The modem is timing out while waiting for the authentication to get 
it's act together.
