[expert] KDE and fatal error on X-server -- couldn't open font path
Folks, Three or four times now, KDE has refused to let me log out, even when I use the control-alt-del key sequence. I've brought up a terminal screen to reboot or shut down, and when I've tried to log back on, I get switched from run level 5 to run level 3 and must log on manually. When I try to run startx, it fails to come up and I get the following error message from the x-server: Error: bad length in symbols Output file "compiled/server-0-xkm removed Could not load XKB kepmap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap Could not init font path element unix/:-1, removing from list! Fatal server error: Could not open default font "fixed" Any thoughts on how to prevent this from happening again? I'm using ML7.2 and the KDE version on the install Cds (1.99?) [expert] Annoying pinstripes on flat-panel screen
Folks, I'm using an HP-FX70 flat panel screen on a Linuxized HP box and I'm having trouble using the screen to its full resolution. When I use DrakeConfig to set the resolution to 1024 x 768, the resolution it loved under Windows, I get annoying pink and yellow "pin stripes" running vertically down the screen. This happens even when I vary the number of colors. Sort of a Brookes Brothers in pastel. The only way I can get rid of the stripes is to reduce the resolution to 800 x 600. The screen remains useable, but not nearly as crisp. I can live with 800 x 600 if I must, but I'd rather use the screen's design resolution if possible. Anyone used one of these screens before and have some configuration tips? By the way, the video chip is an Intel 810, 82810 CGC. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Best regards, Pete Spotts
[expert] URGENT - Problems with a laptop projector linked to Linux laptop
Folks, I'm scheduled to give a Star Office power-point like presentation and tested my Linux laptop with a projector designed for such presentations. During the boot-up process, my screen -- complete with cute Linux penguin -- appeared on the silver screen, prompting me to shout Yipee! But when I moved into KDE desktop, the image on the silver screen disappeared and up popped a lost-signal error message from the projector. That suggested to me that the computer sees the projector just fine, but X-windows does not. I tried running some of the slides for the presentation, thinking the presentation software would do the trick, but still nothing appeared. Anyone out there know if XF86Config [or some other file] wants to see a separate setting for such outboard devices? Does this imply the need for a special driver? If so, what should I tweak or where can I find the driver? I'm doing this gig 2/14 and 2/15, so any ideas would be appreciated -- quickly! Best regards, Pete Spotts
[expert] Configuring 7.2 for DSL via network card and DSL modem
Folks, Can someone help me with configuring my pc for dsl (which,as always, worked dandy in the days of Windows98)? I've got a Lynksys EtherFast card connected to an Efficient Networks Inc. SpeedStream DSL modem. The tuplip.o driver for Linksys is installed (via an RPM of updated drivers). I've tried using Mandrake 7.2's configuration utility, but the driver fails to show up on the driver list. I've then gone into the Linuxconfig utility and found I could find and specify the tulip driver, only to get lost in the maze of choices on other settings. I have basic stats from my ISP, such as DNS numbers, gateways, subnet masks, and the like (supposedly I'm to set the the ISP's IP address to "dynamic," a setting I don't find in Mandrake). In addition, the ISP told me the NIC also has an IP and gateway and gave me those numbers. Again, no indication in either configuration utility as to where NIC's information goes. So: 1. Is there a file I can alter that will allow tulip to show up in the PPPOE configuration utility? And should that be enough to round out the process when I try to use the utility again? 2. What the heck should I do with the NIC IP number and gateway? 3. Is there a file I can use to enter configuration information without having to puzzle through the utilities? Thanks for your patience! Best regards, Pete Spotts (Feel free to answer off line, of you prefer.)
[expert] Upgraded CUP, now system can't find CUP server
Folks, Before upgrading CUP, my printer was working just fine. After upgrading CUP and QTCUP via the Mandrake update utility, my system no longer can find my CUP server. On bootup, at the CUP entry I get execvp:no such directory or file (although it appears when I execute a "locate" from terminal). When I try to configure my printer through Mandrake's configuration utility, it complains about not being able to find the CUP server. I've compared configuration settings with those on another machine on which I've loaded M72, and they look the same. I thought of installing PrintPro, but fuhggitaboutit. The installation ran afoul of too many CUP dependencies and wouldn't install. Obviously, something has changed, perhaps in a configuration file, that is misdirecting something else, but beats me what... Any thoughts? Thanks, Pete Spotts
