Re: [expert] 7.1 network install

I had this when I installed MDK 7.02 on my laptop. I *think* I had to
switch to one of the virtual consoles during the install and modprobe some sort
of ide-hd driver...sorry I can't be more specific, but this was a long time ago
- perhaps this posting might jog someone else's memory?

Change the command that your menu entry executes from:

DiskDrake

to:

su -c "DiskDrake"

Sorry!

My previous post should have said to change the menu item to:

kdesu -c "DiskDrake"

rather then just using the plain old su command.

Yeah, I did that...I'm wondering if maybe "rpm --initdb" might be better. What
files would I need to backup in order to keep a copy of the existing RPM
database? I see that there's a bunch of stuff in /var/lib/rpm, but is there
anything else tucked away that I need to be aware of?

[expert] Problems installing RPM's on 7.1

2000-09-22 Thread Phil Edwards

I have a fresh install of 7.1 on the PC I use at work. I seem to be unable to
install any RPM's at all.

As an example, I wanted to install Star Office today, this is what happened:

[phile@pc35:~]
$ su
Password:
[root@pc35:/home/phile]
[# urpmi staroffice-en-5.1a-2mdk
Failed dependencies: glibc-2.1.3-17mdk requires /sbin/ldconfig

[root@pc35:/home/phile]
# ls -l `which ldconfig`
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 219544 Mar 31 20:33 /sbin/ldconfig*

[root@pc35:/home/phile]
# rpm -qvf /sbin/ldconfig
ldconfig-1.9.5-18mdk

[root@pc35:/home/phile]
# urpmi ldconfig
no package named ldconfig

[root@pc35:/home/phile]
# urpmi ldconfig-1.9.5-18mdk
no package named ldconfig-1.9.5-18mdk

[root@pc35:/home/phile]
# rpm -qv ldconfig

Anybody got any suggestions as to what might be wrong here?

Absoutely right!!!

Okay, then, seeing as you asked so nicely.

I had a printer set up called "carolq", because it was attached to Carol's PC.
LM6.1 printed to it with no problems, LM7.02 didn't want to know.

After a couple of hours scratching around, I ended up in /var/spool/lpd/carolq.
In that directory I found a hidden file called ".config". This file had it's
permission set such that it was only readable by root. This is unfortunate,
since the printer daemon runs as its own user, lpd. A quick "chmod 666 .config"
solved the problem for me.

Oh, you also need to be aware that if you do anything at all to the setup of
this printer using printtool or any of the other nice GUI front ends, it will
set the permissions back to 600 on your ".config" file, so you'll need to fix
it again.

Please let the list know if this fixes your printing problem. I'm about to
install 7.1 on my laptop, so I'll check what happens when I set printers up
there.

If you can't find somewhere to download the "fixed" image from, here's a
step-by-step list of what I did to make a fixed boot disk. The following
assumes that you are logged on as root, with the original, "unfixed"
PCMCIA.IMG diskette mounted as /mnt/floppy:

1. cd /root
2. cp /mnt/floppy/pcmcia.rdz pcmcia.rdz
3. gunzip -S .rdz pcmcia.rdz
4. mount -t ext2 -oloop=/dev/loop0 pcmcia /tmp/a
5. mkdir -p /tmp/a/modules/net
6. cp -p /tmp/a/modules/modules.cgz modules.cgz
7. gunzip -S .cgz modules.cgz
8. cpio -ivdumB 8390.o < modules
9. cp -p 8390.o /tmp/a/modules/net/8390.o
10. umount /tmp/a
11. gzip -S .rdz -9 pcmcia
12. rm -f /mnt/floppy/pcmcia.rdz
13. cp pcmcia.rdz /mnt/floppy/pcmcia.rdz
14. sync; sync; sync
15. umount /mnt/floppy

You can now boot from the "bootnet.img" floppy, insert the "pcmcia.img"
when asked. I have successfully installed LM 7.02 on my Tulip laptop
using the modified boot disk produced by this procedure. Now, if only I
could get the text mode install to work properly, I'd be happy!

[expert] OT (possibly) Linux and SMP

2000-03-08 Thread Phil Edwards

This probably isn't, strictly speaking, the right place to post this, but
I trust the opinions and expertise of the people on this list more than
the collective wisdom of most of Usenet.

Now, having got your attention in the nicest possible way... :-)

I'm planning to upgrade my machine at home this summer. It's currently
running mdk-6.1 without any problems at all. My plan is to install an ABIT
BP-6 motherboard and 2 Celeron 500 processors. I'm sure I've read
somewhere that if I were to do this with (for example) dual Pentium II
CPU's, I'd have to be careful to buy processors with the same stepping
level (whatever that is - I just read it, I don't necessarily understand
it!!) Does this apply to Celeron CPU's?

Is anybody in here using a BP-6 motherboard? Any horror stories to tell,
or even any praises to sing?

As a relative 'newbie' as far as SMP is concerned, is there anything
lurking in the shadows which might trip up the unwary?

Thanks for your indulgence!

I don't know about your other problems, Patrick, but I found recently that
IP Aliasing *does* work in MDK 6.1, but *only* if your network card driver
is compiled into the kernel as a module. I discovered this by accident
recently when I had to reboot my MDK 6.1 box and forgot to type
"newkernel" at the LILO prompt - it loaded the vanilla 2.2.13-22mdk kernel
and my IP aliases came up automatically. I rebooted the machine, using my
self-compiled kernel, and no IP aliases appeared. Note that you will need
to have the "initscripts-4.23-35mdk" RPM installed for this to work.

Although I can't claim to know a great deal about it, the usual solution in
cases like this is to designate one of your machines as an NIS server - all the
user info (including passwords) is then held on the one machine and the rest of
the network refers to that server for authentication information.

That, I'm afraid, is about the sum total of my knowledge of NIS :-(

I got a copy of "Redhat 6 Unleashed" for Christmas, but I haven't got the the
chapter on NIS yet..

[expert] Axalon - Half An Apology....

2000-01-24 Thread Phil Edwards

Axalon:

Some weeks ago, I posted to the list complaining that IP aliasing wouldn't work
in LM 6.1, even with the updated "initscripts" RPM installed.

I've since found out why - I'd reconfigured my kernel so that the driver for my
network card was compiled in, rather than having it as a loadable module. This
prevents the "modprobe" from working in the network startup scripts. I only
discovered this when I accidentally re-booted my machine with the original
2.2.13-22mdk kernel.

So - half an apology, Axalon. :-)

IP Aliasing *does* work, but not if it has to deal with speed freaks like me,
who try to optimise everything in sight! I'll go and hide back under my little
stone now, if that's alright with everyone

[expert] Wierd Konsole behaviour

2000-01-18 Thread Phil Edwards

I wonder if anyone can help me with a Konsole problem?

Whenever I click the Konsole button on the toolbar, I end up in a bash shell in
a sub-directory off my home, rather than being in the home directory as I would
expect. This started happening after I had a quite manic editing session
yesterday eveing - I had about 8 or 9 Konsole sessions going together with 4 or
5 kfm windows and lots of cutting and pasting.

I've checked my bashrc files, and they haven't changed. I've looked in ~/.kde
and there doesn't seem to be anything there either.

Any suggestions?

I don't know where XConfigurator gets its information from for "LCD Panel", but
it seems to me to be quite badly broken. I've always had better luck setting up
X on a laptop by selecting one of the "generic" SVGA monitors, i.e. something
like "Monitor that can do 800x600 @ 60Hz".

As far as PCMCIA support is concerned, I gave away all my Redhat CD's and went
over to Mandrake after a number of abortive attempts to either upgrade to or
install RH6.1 on my laptop - the RH support team told me that I would have to
stick with 6.0, as my PCMCIA controller was not compatible with 6.1.

Re: [expert] Strange X-server behavior after dialing out

2000-01-11 Thread Phil Edwards

If you're using kppp to dial out, there's an option somewhere in the kppp setup
which tells it to set your machine's hostname upon connection. Make sure that
this box is unchecked and you should be okay.

I've read on one of the other NG's (alt.os.linux.mandrake?) that this happens
because of the method that kppp uses to determine whether the current running
kernel has ppp support or not. Apparently, it's exploiting a bug in the
kernel that was fixed with the 2.2.13 release. There's nothing on the kde.org
web site to either confirm or deny this, so YMMV.

Regarding Davids comment about ppp_deflate, this would indicate that it may be
possible to circumvent the problem by doing a "insmod ppp_deflate" in your
/etc/rc.d/rc.local.

I have to disagree - I've kept up with all of the 6.1 updates, and my IP

There aren't many things that really get my back up, but the quote given in
this press release does:

"I am happy to see the support from ATI for XFree86 and the Linux community"

ATI have (to the best of my knowledge) done *absolutely nothing* until now to
help the XFree86 project team with any kind of development support. Don't get me
wrong, I'm glad they've (apparently) changed their minds, but to try and give
the impression that they've been a "Linux-Friendly" corporation all along
really stinks.

I wonder if they'll be happy to put any newly-developed drivers out under the
GPL?

You could try:

3. mount -a

This may work, depending upon your partition layout.

[expert] KDE Konsole Configuration

I have a requirement to be able to emulate a 7-bit VT220 terminal over a telnet

Is there a configuration file somewhere that I can hack to make it send the

It was all of my own doing - I installed the 2.2.13-22 RPM, then for some
reason which seemed perfectly valid at the time, but which eludes me
completely now, I did a "make modules" and "make modules_install", which seemed
to reduce everything to non-functioning status in record time!

Luckily, it wasn't a PC which I desperately needed to use, so I took the

Don't know if this will work for you, but it did for me, on a Tulip Motion Line
laptop:

I downloaded the boot images from the UK Sunsite server at:

http://sunsite.org.uk/packages/Mandrake/6.1b/images,

Boot up from the bootnet.img diskette. This should prompt you for the
pcmcia.img diskette, from where I was able to do an NFS installation with no
further problems.

Sunsite has a 6.1 and a 6.1b directory, with the 6.1 being the most recent. I
can only presume that the 6.1b is an early beta release of the real 6.1 distro.

[expert] Oh, Bugger...

1999-11-10 Thread Phil Edwards

Up until quite recently, I had a pristine new install of 6.1 on an
(almost) brand new PC.

Having got everything up and running, I clicked on the "Updates"
desktop icon. To my delight, it went off and found me some new
versions of stuff. I clicked "select all" and then clicked "Go!".

One of the updates was the 2.2.13-22mdk kernel. Now my machine won't
boot properly. I've amended /etc/lilo.conf to point at the new kernel
image, and run /sbin/lilo to update everything. When I re-boot, the
machine gets as far as the "finding module dependencies" bit, then
hangs. I can CTRL-C to continue booting up, but then I have no
network card, no sound and no access to any of my non-Linux
filesystems.

I promise that if someone can help me get this fixed, I won't
recklessly apply OS updates ever again without checking the
documentation and/or making backups first!!!

I haven't done anything on the authentication side, but I have an F50
running AIX 4.3.2.0 with SAMBA installed, and that works okay. I also
use NFS quite regularly to get stuff across to my Linux box, i.e with
the RS/6000 acting as an NFS server.

I seem to recall seeing something posted in the comp.unix.aix
newsgroup to the effect that if you want to use an AIX box as an NFS
client with a Linux NFS server, you need do "nfso -o
nfs_use_reserved_ports=1" on the AIX side to avoid the possibility of
file corruption. Check the NG yourself, though, before relying on the
vagaries of my memory for anything mission-critical! :-)
