as far as i remember, the 7.0 g_auto_install was broken (don't even remember if
i gave a fix for this).

in 7.1 it's kind of working, at least it works nicely under 7.1 (it has some pbs
running on a 7.0, partly fixed with mandrake.com/en/heliumlast.php3)

yeah, we are ;p

see mandrake.com/en/heliumlast.php3

Error scenario: g_auto_install segmentation faults
When: While running g_auto_install.
Why: The ld-linux dynamic loader changed in 7.1.
Solution: Copy this g_auto_install to /tmp, then mount the installation
CD-ROM to /mnt/cdrom and run ../perl /tmp/g_auto_install in the directory
/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/mdkinst/usr/bin/perl-install. This will allow you to
properly generate the auto_inst.cfg.pl file for automatic installation.
Please note that the g_auto_install program is more for power users and many
people will not have to worry about applying this patch to their own system.

this is not that easy. To nicely fulfill the installation, the install kernel
has to be in a really special shape.
the other pb is that we don't have any such 'failure to initialize cdrom' error
here. if we had, we could test...

as for rushing out, we can't do much thing when the kernel is against us, even
more when we can't reproduce. The pb is the same with some scsi cards... People
don't understand that the kernel is a moving thing and it *breaks* things when
it evolves. It's necessary!

not a good idea.

Here is how a kernel *without scsi boot on an scsi disk:
- the bios knows how to handle scsi, it loads the first sector of the disk, aka
lilo
- lilo loads its second stage using the bios
- lilo loads the kernel using the bios
- lilo loads the initrd using the bios
- lilo gives the hand to the kernel. The initrd is loaded in memory at that time
and accessible by the kernel
- the kernel uses the initrd as its root
- the initrd loads the scsi module and leaves
- the kernel mounts the real root
