[expert] Strange Joystick Problem

I am running 8.1 with a Microsoft Sidewinder Pro USB joystick.  It worked 
fine for a while.  Now, when I use it as a normal user (even a newly created 
normal user) the buttons don't work properly.  Using jscalibrator, almost all 
my buttons, when pressed, show up as button no. 8.  When I use it as root, 
the buttons are all fine (i.e., when pressed button 1 shows in jscalibrator 
as button 1, button 2 shows as button 2, etc.).  As a normal user, button 1, 
when pressed, shows as button 8 in my account, and button 6 in my kids' 
accounts and in a new account I created just to try to figure out what's 
going on.  I've fiddled with the permissions and I've removed and recreated 
the joystick device, but no matter what I do it works fine for root but not 
for anyone else.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

I don't think it is illegal to use Ogle or libdvdcss to watch dvds that you 
own.  What I understand to be illegal is the distribution of libdvdcss by, 
for example, posting or linking to it.
