[expert] Install problem

2000-11-05 Thread Roland Hightower

I started using mandrake when 7.0 first came out. Installed easily and I loved
it. I upgraded to 7.1 when it came out. My 7.1 system works fantastic and I
also have it running on another computer in the house that acts as my email
server and proxy for this mandrake box and my wife's windows me machine.
I have run into a problem trying to upgrade to 7.2. Everything goes just fine
until it asks for the 2nd disk. I put it in and it kicks it back out when I
click on the ok button, the same thing for the 3rd and 4th disk, so I do the
install with just the 1st disk. I discovered afterwards I'm unable to access
my cdrom, I get an error saying it's locked and I don't have access to it.
This occurs as a user or as root. Cdrom2 works fine. What I'm thinking is
this drive gets locked during installation from the 1st disk and is unable to
read the subsequent disks. Why would this happen? Hardware? I've had the
same results on 2 different computers. I've tried the upgrade option and the
install option using store bought disks and disks I burned from iso's I
downloaded. Maybe I'll disconnect my cdrom and run the install from the cd-rw
drive. I'm getting tired of doing installs. I sure do like what I've seen of
7.2 and would like to get it installed so that it works properly. There just
seems to be too much missing not being able to use the other disks.

[expert] Promise Ultra100

2000-10-29 Thread Roland Hightower

Is the Promise Ultra100 card compatable with linux? I put one in another box I
built to run linux on, it's detected during post process, but during the linux
boot it stops in the middle somewhere saying is can't mount file system 3:01.
In trying to do a new install, the install stops at the point of installing the
packages saying it can't find a media to install the operating system on.
The kernel has the 'boot offboard chipset first' option compiled in, whether
that makes any difference or not. Any ideas? Anyone using one of these
controllers?

[expert] drakboot - making boot floppy

2000-10-22 Thread Roland Hightower

Has anyone had any problems making a boot floopy or formatting a floppy
with ext2 file system with drakboot? After trying, when I go to mount the
floppy I get an error saying 'wrong fs type, bad super block, or too many
mounted file systems'. If I format the floppy with a dos fs, the floppy is
readable and writeable. But after creating a boot floppy, the floppy isn't
readable. How do I go about creating a boot floppy from a command line?
I thought I would try it that way and see whaat happens.

Same here, everything I remember reading about the Athlon the first few months it
hit, said it outperformed
the PIII in every aspect. My system runs a K63-400 and I love it as much as I do my
operating system!!
Hope to upgrade to an Athlon one day soon.

[expert] Packet monitoring

2000-10-10 Thread Roland Hightower

Is there a program that will allow me to monitor the packets coming into and going out
of
my box? What's the name of it and where can I download it? Or is it already on my
system and I just don't know what it is?

[expert] Realmagic driver

2000-07-12 Thread Roland Hightower

I've seen it, but don't remember where. Does anyone know where I can find the
driver for the Realmagic Hollywood Plus DVD decoder card? I remember seeing it
a couple months ago when I first installed LM 7.0, but at the time, my dvd card
was the least of my concerns. Now I'm wondering where it is, it's not at the
manufacturer's site.

Thanks,
Ro
