I recently got the idea to setup a 11Mbps wireless lan at home and I

less than $500. I was looking in the pcmcia-cs's SUPPORTED.CARDS file and
I was wandering if any of you are using any of these cards under Linux. I
have already tried the CISCO 340 and the Raylink/BreezeCOM and both work
fine but CISCO is way too expensive and Raylink is only 2Mbps. I'm
considering buying a Linksys accespoint and PCMCIA card which adds up
arond the $400, but on the pcmcia-cs's documentation says that some
features are missing, but don't say which. I'm also considering the D-Link
and SMC systems, which of course are the most afordable ones.

Please let me know if you have had any experience with these guys, or if
you alredy have something similar with any other products.

 Thanks,

 Luis

I've already got an Apple Airport base station (For my wife's ibook, $299
BTW) so I purchased an Orinoco (Lucent) Wavelan Silver card for my laptop
which runs L-M 7.2 and Win ME. This card is so Linux compatible, they have
drivers on the CD, along with Windows and MAC drivers. That's still pretty
rare. The card that Apple uses for all their wireless devices is simply a
relabled Lucent silver, without an antenna.

Does anyone know how to make settings with the utility

 Regards,

Append the commands you want to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. Boot
performance?? You must be a dual booter? I was worried about this too, but I
realized I only rebooted about once a week or so...

[expert] Mandrake 7.2 on Compaq 17XL360

2000-12-28 Thread Steven W. Laird

Mandrake 7.2 installed easily on my new Compaq 17XL360. One reason I bought
this model is that older 1700/1800 models had Intel EtherExpress Pro/100
built in.

Of course, this new version have something called "Compaq 10_100 MiniPCI
Ethernet NIC" instead. Has anyone had any luck finding any information about
the chip used and which driver might work?? I've searched deja.com, Linux
on Laptops and the web in general... No luck, yet.

I was told that hdparm was about adjusting the HD and I know that the
/dev/hda is referring to device hda which is the hard drive but those lines
in between got me totally stumped.

works fine for my limited sound needs, at least.

And I did just the opposite. My Soyo MB has VIA VT82C686 [Apollo Super
AC97/Audio] onboard and it sounded "garbled" as well. I disabled the onboard
sound, installed my old PNP ISA SB16, ran sndconfig and I was in business.

Does anyone know of a product to control filtering on these ports??

Try e-smith. Find for free (.iso image) at www.e-smith.net

If you are using Linux-Madrake 6.0 do either of the following:
1. Go to "K" , System, Desktop Switching Tool or
2. From a term window type "switchdesk"

another hint... Create another user and do your window manager experimenting
without the fear of messing up your customized desktop!
