[expert] kernel compiling
is there some program that compiles the kernel source and produces the vmlinuz and initrd files that the regular kernel has? I've followed the directions in the readme file and end up with a bzImage file. There are instructions for making an initrd file from scratch but surely there must be some script file somewhere that does that.

[expert] Three trivial questions
Three trivial questions on LM 8.0 -- sorry to waste everyone's time: 1. How do I get rid of the opening screen that says "Welcome" in different languages? it is about as interesting as a flyer off an airline. 2. How do I get the penguin image back for "root" in the opening xwindow dialog? 7.2 had a viking penguin as root, but now there is nothing and you have to type "root" in. 3. How do I change the opening numlock state? There used to be something in setup to do that but now there's nothing and the numlock is always set on.
Re: [expert] Usb mouse isn't loaded after install
I have the same mouse and it works on my regular computer. maybe your usb port is buggy. There usually are two, try switching the mouse from one to the other and see if it works. However, I tried installing 7.2 on a Sony VAIO laptop however, and the USB mouse didn't work --linux didn't recognize whatever USB system Sony had. What if the configuration buttons could make the car anything from a two-seater economy car to a van, and you only had to configure it once, and the car was free, or if you felt generous, you could send the car company a hundred dollars or so? And what if the only other cars available were (a) a big fat plush gold-plated bumbling Caddillac that came in various styles, but each one used lots of gas, or (b) a Volkswagen new beetle available in candy-apple-red, bottle-fly-blue, or jolly-rancher-purple, with a picture of John Lennon on the side saying "I drove this" even though he died before they were made, and both of the other cars cost $25,000 apiece? Re: [expert] One BIG anoying Pain in the A**
doesn't that mean that you've gotta go UNINSTALL kdelibs-sound, etc., before going on? I assume you are installing the KDE upgrades that don't require glibc 2.2 or whatever that is in the cooker. I used gnome or icewm instead of KDE to do this (if you are in KDE it either won't work or you'll crash.) When I got to that point I used rpmdrake to uninstall the offending 2.0-5 packages. Then I installed kdebase or kdelibs or whatever it was. You've got to install the libs before the base, as I recall. At that point the useful kpackage utility disappeared and I then had to use rpm commands in a terminal window to install the rest of the packages. (I could have used the rpm uninstall command instead of rpmdrake but I couldn't get it right.) At that point I logged out, logged back in as KDE and it worked, except there was still no kpackage. I used rpmdrake again and found that there were some uninstalled miscellaneous little kde files left over from version 2.0-5, which I reinstalled and then kpackage reappeared. Trying to install one of the later KDE versions that require glibc 2.2 is much harder and I think pretty much requires downloading all of the cooker files. -Original Message- From: Mark Weaver <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Friday, December 29, 2000 7:57 AM Subject: [expert] One BIG anoying Pain in the A** >Ok...I've followed the directions, done everything that was to be done, and >still I get the same stinking, anoying, almost M$-like error. [expert] Disk partitioning and Disk Drake
If you are installing linux on a clean hard drive, Disk Drake may be okay. If you are installing linux on a system with windows on it, like a lot of people will be, and are trying to create a linux partition out of unused space on the drive, sorry, Mandrake, but someone needs to work on this. I have found that various versions of Disk Drake will create partition errors, anything from minor errors that don't seem to affect the drive to real goofball errors on some cooker versions. Whatever you do, don't create a linux "primary" partition using Disk Drake. Disk Drake doesn't resize the extended Dos partition that the dos fdisk originally set up. Instead, it creates linux partitions in the extended Dos partition. This kind of bothers me. Shouldn't the linux partition be created as totally separate from the Dos partition? "Extended" seems to be the default choice in Disk Drake. If you try to create a "primary" linux partition in the extended Dos partition, you'll end up with a truly goofed-up partition table. I fixed this with a third party program called Partition Commander but was freaked for a short while, thinking I'd lost everything. It is safer to use something like Partition Commander to set up the linux partitions, and then install linux. You can change the default file system in the linux partition to reiserfs when you install linux. If you install linux as a secondary os on a laptop, careful, because you might not even be able to boot from a floppy if things go wrong. There is no bios setup in the Sony VAIO laptop I have, it seems to be a stupid windows program! Grub got stuck and wouldn't boot anything, just displayed a "grub" on the screen, even though I'd set the stupid windows Bios configuration to boot CD-floppy-hard disk in that order. The only way to fix this was to stick in the linux installation cd and reinstall or upgrade without selecting files so you can redo grub or whatever. I really think the Mandrake versions of linux are great -- the only ones that were ever easy to install and use -- and I hate to have to rely on third party software to fix things, but that's just the way it is. Partition Commander is pretty cheap (I picked one up for about $30).

Re: [expert] Partition errors using Disk Drake
Oh, you probably know this already but Disk Drake causes errors when it makes partitions.I think it partitioned off part of an extended dos drive rather than making a new partition. It is better to use something else to make the partitions, like partition commander or something. They're not the type of errors that crash the computer but they showed up in a partition check and made me nervous. Re: [expert] reiserfs
Maybe this will sound dumb, but can you experts tell the rest of us, how do you install reiserfs if you have to unmount the partition to do it? Do you create two partitions, install a minimal linux on one, format the other partition, copy all the linux files to it, reboot, change the parms in grub to point to the other partition, delete the other parition, and then use the reiser expand function to expand the partition? or do you create a minimal linux system, copy it to a cd, point grub to the cd, etc? Or are you limited to a home partition for the reiser file system? Is this image file hdreiser.img that comes with LM 7.2 meaningful or do you have to patch the kernel? [expert] mode lines
That cute little mode line configurator -- does it work only with the 3.3.6 version of XFree86, or does it work with the 4.0 version as well? running either version, the extra mode lines didn't seem to make a difference. Occasionally I got a menu saying that the extra resolutions were there, but they weren't really. The highest resolution was a 1280x1024, which I use. I've fooled with the registers of older video cards before and remember that there are often locking bits or registers that prevent the user from using anything but the garden variety screen resolutions. Does anyone know whether Mandrake ever created a txt_boot.img file for Mandrake 7.1? If not, is there any way to install it if neither the DrakX graphics or text installation works? I have SCSI-3 hard disks and two CD drives, one HP CD Writer and one CD Rom. Mandrake 7.0 installed via txt_boot.img, but never recorded the passwords properly. - Original Message - From: "Mike Bowley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2000 2:49 AM Subject: RE: [expert] 10 favorite Linux tips... : Deno : : Did that URL actually work for you?
