[expert] ask WD about their ide disk CRC issue..
hi: i wrote WD to ask them about the CRC issue of their ide hard disks. they say they are doing CRC now... below are my question and their answers.. any ideas? -- Customer (tbsky lee) 10/03/2002 11:37 PM Hm.. i know linux can run at WD hd. but there are many information indicate that WD fail to do CRC check at high speed. let me find a link for u. the guy "Civileme" say so is a linux developer. if he is wrong, or ur product has changed(eg: do CRC now). please let me know, so i can tell others. thanks a lot!!! http://www.mail-archive.com/expert@linux-mandrake.com/msg37469.html http://www.mail-archive.com/expert@linux-mandrake.com/msg20209.html Regards, tbsky --- Response (Barb) 10/07/2002 12:28 PM Western Digital uses CRC checking when doing UDMA transfers. We actually have a device known as the MEG-1 Box that purposely injects CRC errors between the drive and the host as part of our standard FIT testing.--- Customer (tbsky lee) 10/08/2002 05:32 AM hi: thanks for ur information!! can u tell me if all the products in the market now doing CRC correctly? i mean, all the AB,BB,and JB series.. thanks for ur information, so i can tell others!! thanks a lot:) Regards, tbsky --- Response (Barb) 10/08/2002 09:16 AM Yes, all Western Digital drives use CRC checking. hi: "noapic" didn't work for me. the server will hang under high loading after 4 or 5 hours. i use "ctcs" testing program to test. mdk 8.1 or red-hat 7.2 didn't have this problem. sorry i didn't have a chance to test it with red-hat 7.3, bc4 the server is one line with mdk 8.1 now... > I should report that I got a message from Tom Wanka. > The "noapic" boot option worked for him (he had a serverworks > chipset), so this will probably also work for you. > We do not use this chipset, so it is not clear if > it will work in our case. > > There could also be a bug in the kernel. [expert] warning!! problem about mdk hardware database...
hi: i test my hardware (hp lc2000) with mandrake 8.1 and 8.2. the hardware database say this machine is certified with 8.1. i know with machine has cdrom problem with 8.1 default install (cause by serverworks chipset). but i don't know where to report this problem, so i mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and got no reply. today i check the hardware database again. and i saw the first "certified" server under 8.2: "ADVANTECH RS-200". it is very like hp lc2000, both using serverworks chipset, 82559 lan, ati vga, and symbios scsi. lc2000 is not stable with 8.2, but i saw it as "known hardware" under 8.2. maybe it will become "certified" in a few weeks, since RS-200 can pass the test.. i already report lc2000 problem at cooker list, but it seems nobody at mandrake saw it. so i m curious is there any way to report hardware database error? Hi: in fact i have two machines. server is PIII 800 with 512MB ram, mine is k6-2 300 with 128MB ram. these have the same problem with 8.1. and mine is good with 8.2. haven't update the server.must wait for 8.2 to be more stable :) > Thanks, this seems to confirm that under certain circumstances people > do have problems with xfs in md8.1. Hi: with Mandrake 8.1 and XFS, i often need to copy kdmrc from other 8.1 machines, to make my X start again after inproper shutdown. but 8.2 with XFS seems OK so far, i now shutdown my PC directly everyday when running X(just for testing...)... so far so good...
