On a chance, try rpm --rebuild (as root) and then run MandrakeUpdate,
from an xterm. Check for error messages. MandrakeUpdate does
occaisionallly screw up the rpm database when the downloads etc glitch.
I also noted that some time after the cups update, I got a message in
/var/log/messages saying lpd was not running and it was starting. I
have just done a "ps aux|grep lpd" and it is not running, but prints ok.
In my case it was coz I tried to reconfigure cups to let a 7.1 machine
connect to the printer - eventually killed everting. An install of the
configuration files from a backup I made after install fixed it. You
may have to manually delete the config files and reinstall the rpm's to
sort it out - no amount of manual configuration would work. Also after
replacing the config files, printing from the 7.1 machine worked!
There are also instructions on MUO to remove cups and go back to lpd,
which may save al ot of time and heartache.

* the kde updates worked fine for me, no changes noticed afterwards.

Richey,
You are right on about the new updates, especially the cups
1.1.6-2.1mdk rpm. Force that one and you may find that your printing
is broken.
Yep, totally broken. You can't even find lpr now! Any ideas how to
fix this. It really sucks that Mandrake would post a broken rpm like
this on the "normal" updates.
