[expert] Boot problem
Hi all, I have updated 8.1 to 8.2 and all seemed to go well except when I rebooted after update and selected linux from the menu I was left with an 'S' on the screen, the hard disk activity light a constant red and no response. I tried various things like nodevfs and just text lilo. I then installed from scratch thinking that may be the problem but the result is the same. However, failsafe works - is that a clue? [expert] boot problem
I have just installed Mandrake on my machine (an HP Vectra XU). I have both an IDE and SCSI hard drive, and put Mandrake in /dev/sda7. I have had several other Linux distributions, and never had a problem booting. I have LILO in /dev/hda, and have put I made a boot floppy and can boot from it without any problems, but when I attempt to boot from the hard drive, I get the following: Boot done. enabling symmetric IO mode... ...done. ENABLING IO-APIC IRQs ... changing IO-APIC physical APIC ID to 16 Kernel panic: could not set ID In swapper task - not syncing Any ideas? Thanks. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! [expert] Boot problem
I've got two hard drives in my computer -- an 850 meg IDE and a 10.5 GB (some reason it only shows up as 8.5 GB) SCSI drive. I'm booting off my IDE drive, but for some reason the system will NOT boot unless I have the boot disk in the floppy drive (the one I made at install.) The symptoms are this: Black screen with a blinking/flashing "underscore" character ("_") in the upper left corner of the screen. The hardware is as follows: Dual-PPro 200 MHZ in a W6LI Micronics motherboard with 192 MB RAM. SCSI controller is an ABP940-UA (PCI Ultra Narrow.) Video is an S3 Virge DX 4mb PCI video. On-board sound (Vibra 16). IDE drive is a Seagate 850 (Re-labled Conner after Seagate bought Conner.) SCSI is a Seagate full-height 5.25". Please feel free to ask anything else. I've got it set to boot to init level 3 (console, NOT GUI!) I have tried two different monitors -- a "Socos" 14" and a Compaq 15" both SVGA. John

Can you see at which point it fails? Does it get to the point that it's running any of the init scripts (you'll see a bunch of [OK] mssages on the screen)? If so try selectively turning off stuff like USB, sound, rawdisks, nfs, etc.. If you can't get to that point, try re-installing the kernel and re-running LILO. As you've also tried, turn off stuff like the fbconsole, devfs, hard drive optimizations, etc.. Check that your initrd is current and pointing to the correct image matching the kernel. Does the failsafe kernel point to the same image as the non-working image? Since it's *usually* the same kernel, check to make sure that both got updated correctly. Also, make sure that all the symlinks are current. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Hi again, Lilo stops as soon as it starts i.e. starting linux . What is the difference when running failsafe? The image and kernel are the same, the only difference is the word Failsafe. If some kind person could enlighten me maybe it will point me in the right direction. regards Paul Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
