RE: [expert] Good CSU/DSU card

2000-05-18 Thread james.fogg

Most of my work is with routers, but I have played with the PC based synch
V.35 serial ports from time to time.

My suggestion is to use a synch V.35 card and an external CSU-DSU. CSU's
make wonderful lightning arrestors! In my lifetime I have probably replaced
about 250 roasted CSU's that were the victim of lightning. If the CSU were
internal to the PC, the PC would take the hit. My crystal ball says your
next question is "so why use internal modems?". Well, I don't for the above
reason. T1 service is delivered as a two-pair circuit with no bridge-taps
(at least in the U.S.). Bridge-taps (used in dialtone loop circuits) help
greatly with lightening damping. T1 is also a balanced circuit and dialtone
loops are (usually) unbalanced (less attractive to lightening).

I don't remember the manufacturers of the serial cards, but there are two or
three good ones. A simple internet search on "ISA V.35" or "PCI V.35" will
give good results.

[expert] Good CSU/DSU card

2000-05-17 Thread Doc

Hail all. I am looking for a good CSU/DSU card for a mandrake router that we
have here. It will interface with a T1 line and then have a second NIC to
interface with the network. Any idea of a compatible one and maybe a ruff
idea of the cost?

Thanks
