Sorry, I don't see the problem.  Please explain what you mean by this.

No, they use a lower level thing called Open Sound System (OSS) or in the 
future, Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA).

  If not, is there a way I can force them to?

Type soundwrapper myprogram name.
