Re: [expert] KDE 2.1 CVS at nebsllc.com
Yes I rebooted twice (was also doing some cleaning on my 2.4 kernel setup and the lilo configuration). When I installed KDE 2.1 CVS I was running 2.2.17 now I am running 2.4.0 with ReiserFS patch (soon to move to 2.4.1 when released). As to the checkpass problem, I don't have the source for the 01152001 CVS so I just used the source from Beta 1 and recompiled just checkpass with PAM and Shadow support. When I ran strace on the original it was getting an error message about opening the PAM database, then went through the process of trying to open up Shadow and failed to get the password correct. When run direct from the command line without strace it worked fine, which is odd. Also as an FYI, I installed KDE 2.1 CVS from a command prompt at init level 3. Then rebooted into init level 5 (I like to take chances). I was able to login fine although the KDM was totally different from the Beta 1 version of KDM, and all my other window managers were missing from the startup. It also forgot to restrict the list of shown users to just the ones I had specified. It is a well running build but missing some of the polish of the previous builds I have pulled from this location. It could have just been a simple oversight or as you mentioned a bug in the Makefile. Re: [expert] KDE 2.1 CVS at nebsllc.com
Close but no cigar! I tried to update using the entire directory of kde2.1 and the command "urpmi *.rpm" There were several other dependances which needed to be fulfilled . . . unfortunately, it asked for a package called qt2-2.3.7-develop which I can't seem to find - another dead end. I appreciate people like Chris making the extra effort to bring us something cool before it's officially released, but a bit of step-by-step instructions showing how he got it to work would be of great help! My two cents worth . . . Oh well, I'll wait for the next Mandrake release, this is burning up more time than I expected . .. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi Christ, Thanks for the RPMs! Packaging-wise they seem faultless... why isn't artsd started in startkde though? [expert] KDE 2.1 CVS at nebsllc.com
I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but I couldn't get the screen savers to unlock with this version of the KDE 2.1 RPMs. So I went into my KDE 2.1 Beta 1 source tree and recompiled kcheckpass with PAM support. Installed this version of kcheckpass and things appear to be working. I can't confirm that this alone was the cause but it did correct the problem. I also compiled in shadow support so it could have been either one of these missing components that caused the problem with the screensavers. Other than that, the new CVS RPMS seem to be working well for me. And I love the fact that they put back the lock and logout icons on the task bar. This is something I have been sorely missing.
