Re: [expert] KDE 2.1.1 for LM72 -- Success After All!

2001-04-08 Thread Randy Kramer

Benjamin,

Thanks for your efforts and persistence in sorting this out.

I have some questions that you or someone else might be able to answer:

1. Will the rpms install / work with XFree86.3.x.x? (It looks like the
files you listed include only XFree86-4.0.3. One of my machines will
only work with XFree86-3.x.x because it has an SiS 5597 video chipset on
board.)

2. I upgraded one of my Mandrake 7.2 installations to kde 2.1. There
are some problems -- it does not work 100% correctly. Do you think I
can use the rpms to upgrade from my current installation to kde 2.1.1,
or should I make a "clean" reinstallation of Mandrake 7.2 and start from
there?

Aside: There has been some speculation that the XFree86-4.0.3 drivers
for SiS will work with the SiS 5597. Can anybody actually confirm
this? (If there is misinformation, I contributed to it -- I asked on
the XFree mailing list about SiS 5597 drivers for 4.0.3. Someone
responded saying they believed the 4.0.3 driver worked for the SiS 5597
because there were multiple references to the SiS 5597 in the driver
source code. I don't believe that person actually tried it, and I never
actually tried it, but I passed the same information to someone else (on
the cooker list IIRC). Sorry, my mistake!

Thanks,
Randy Kramer

You will probably want to go directly to the source for first hand information.
http://xfree86.org/4.0.3/SiS1.html#1

Here it is, in part.

This driver was primarily written for the SiS6326 and SiS530 by Alan Hourihane. It
also works on 5597/5598 chips, and probably on older SiS862X5 family.

The driver supports :

Linear Addressing
8/15/16/24 bits per pixel
Fully programmable clocks are supported
H/W acceleration and cursor support
XAA support (XFree86 Acceleration Architecture)

Larry,

As an aside, I just wanted you to know that I had made an attempt to go
to the source, and found this (probably 1-2 months ago, but it hasn't
changed).

Quoting:

Support for the 86C201, 86C202, 86C215, 86C225, 5597 and 5598 is
currently only available in 3.3.6.

Sounds like your information is more up to date and deals with 4.0.3,
where the information above only deals with 4.0.2 (and 3.3.6), and your
information is good news!

I had written to xfree once about updating the page I referenced, I
don't know whether it's worth trying again.

Thanks again!

Larry,

Sorry if this is a duplicate -- I tried to send a message like this just

Anyway, thanks very much for that information.

I wanted to let you know that I did try to go to the source, something
like 1 to 2 months ago, and found this (and still says this today):

Clearly, your information is better information because it is based on
4.0.3 instead of 4.0.2, and is also better news!

I am writing (again) to xfree86 to suggest that they rearrange the
information to be more clear.

Thanks,
Randy Kramer

Dear Kompukit:

You can do

#rpm --rebuilddb

and

#update-menus -v

both in KDE"s konsole (or any xterm) or you can log out of KDE into the
console, and do it there. If you have chosen to boot up to KDE directly
(runlevel 5, i.e. graphically), then you should do this in KDE's xterm, then
reboot. If you boot up to the console first (runlevel 3), then type startx to
log into KDE, then you can perform these commands either in KDE or in the
console, then log out back into the console after installation of KDE 2.1.1.
and log back in or, to play it safe, just reboot.

2001-04-08 Thread Mark Weaver

Kit,

In order to drop out to a console, even though it's not necessary to do
the update, just hit CTRL+ALT+F1. that will take you to a console. You
will be looking at a console login prompt. Log in as root, and do your
stuff. Navigate to the dir with the packages in and issue the command to
start the upgrade process.

rpm -Uvh --test *.rpm

I like to use the --test argument to test for dependency problems first to
make sure everything is good to go, then if I don't get anything returned
to the command line I remove the --test argument and run the update.

After you've done the "rpm --rebuilddb" and "update-menus" you can return
to your still running X-windows session by pressing CTRL+ALT+F7. From
here, if you're not already there you can log out of your X-windows
session to the graphical login screen and restart your computer. Actually,
all you should really have to do is start the X server, but sometimes
folks feel better if they restart the system entirely. A left over of the
Windows world. Nothing to be ashamed of.

That's all there is to it.

them, 120.1 meg) as follows:

#rpm -Uvh --nodeps --replacefiles *.rpm

When I first did an rpm -Uvh *.rpm I got an error message telling me that
there was one failed dependency, namely, that kdesu was not installed. That's
not true because kdesu is included in kde-base (and is not available
separately in LM72). So, there are NO failed dependencies. But some files in
KDE2.1.1 must replace certain files in earlier versions of KDE 2 (you must
first install KDE 2.0 or KDE 2.01 in order to upgrade to KDE 2.1.1.

Installation was a success. All 53 files returned 50 hashes each. There was
one error message about a certain font but it said: "skipping." so I am sure
everything installed OK.

After installation, exit KDE, then in the console do a:

#rpm --rebuilddb (rebuilding the database)

and

#update-menus -v

Then reboot and you've got KDE 2.1.1. You can check the Control Center to see
the new version number.

My thanks to everyone who helped. Hope I have been of help to others,
especially to other newbies like myself.
