Re: [expert] Mandy Locks Up on simple tar!
Thanks for the response. I will switch to a new disk today. What i have been doing is saving/making a full system backup to a scsi disk (sda1). Then when the main disk fails, I simply restore from sda1. It has worked so well in the past, only this time I cant restore the same saved filesets (/, /usr) cause the system locks up before I finish the restore process. If I dont perform any tar process, the system works OK for number of days, as Memory used keeps climbing. When Mem used==Mem Avail, the system locks up again, until a reboot. PS and top both have not been able to show me what is eating up all the memory. Mind u, this box has 2GB worth of it, and it is doing nothing more than being a NFS server!! I will update of performance after disk switch, but if there anymore hints, they are welcomed (B4 i throw it out-tha-window!!) _Thanks ALL, and esp. civilme! --- civileme [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Friday 21 February 2003 05:28 pm, James Sparenberg wrote: Sounds like your first problem and this problem could be somehow connected but not sure how. 2 questions Can you do the tar in smaller pieces. Re: [expert] Mandy Locks Up on simple tar!
CPU...locks up on a simple tar Then i only have to reboot. Thats the only thing i can do!! I hadn't done the vmstat like you, but I've had this problem before with different distributions including older Mandrakes, when my primary disk was a 1.6 gig Maxstor. That drive has since been relegated to /var, whilst everything else is on a 30 gig IBM drive. I would guess that the problem was bad sectors on the drive. As I recall, the box froze every time I did a tar (backing up to tape) when reading certain files. I don't recall seeing a lockup during a block write operation, only when the blocks are read. Now why it should lock up during a 'tar' is still a mystery. I would have half expected error messages in the logs if these files were read by another method. Re: [expert] Mandy Locks Up on simple tar!
Sounds like your first problem and this problem could be somehow connected but not sure how. 2 questions Can you do the tar in smaller pieces. (it could be a single fuzzed up file or sector on the HDD is causing the problem read/write there is hanging the box. If so, doing it in smaller bits will help you locate it. You can always tar a group of tars later. If you don't want to or can't do smaller pieces try tar -cvvf etc etc etc. tarout.txt. This will give you a visual of what is happening as the tar is going along. Then when the box hangs You'll know the suspect file. It will be the last one the box was able to write to the tarout.txt file.
