2000-11-06 Thread Stephen Boulet

One quick tip for comiling:

Do a "make -j 4" instead of just make; this will start 4 threads going. Works
great for kernel compiles (but just don't do it for "make dep" or "make
install".

Someone benchmarked it and found that 4 or 5 threads were about optimum.

Re: [expert] More smp

2000-11-06 Thread Douglas

If you can afford this then put much, much more memory into the machine than
you normally would with a single processor. For normal workstation usage (no
monster graphics, database or GIS files) I can't see any improvement for
anything above 256 megs of memory. For dual processor machines this value
goes to 512 megs. Of course you can run a machine with much less memory. I'm
trying to point out that for the maximum amount of performance, memory seems
to be one of the keys.

[expert] More smp

2000-11-06 Thread PatMc

I am very happily running a dual Celeron machine.

Were can I get info on smp ( basic and otherwise )- how to get the most
out of it ...etc. Not having any problems. Just want a better
understanding of what is going on.

Thanks
Pat
