After you install the GeForce4, download and install the Nvidia drivers for
Mandrake 9.0 either from the Mandrake Club or a contrib directory. Then run
XFdrake or edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 by hand (XFdrake is probably
preferred). Then you should be able to start X.

When X is running, bring up a terminal and type:
glxinfo | grep render

You should see:
direct rendering: Yes

I have a G4 Ti4200. I just replaced my ATI Radeon DDR with it and the new
card is great. I built and installed the latest NVidia drivers (RPM) on my
Mandrake 8.2 system and it works beautifully. Very fast. Also, all the
opengl apps/games that were crapping out or crashing X with the Radeon work
without hitch now (I believe there must be a Radeon-based driver issue
somewhere).

[expert] New video card advice

2002-10-11 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
Dear friends,
I have decided what video card buy: a NVIDIA Geforce4; I have seen 5 different
models:

GeForce4 MX 460
GeForce4 MX 440 w/AGP 8x
GeForce4 MX 440
GeForce4 MX 440-SE
GeForce4 MX 420

All with 64MB Ram, being the first the most powerfull. --

Does anyone have experienced with one of this card and Mandrake 8.2 or 9.0?

Could you recommend me any of them?

Is possible with a 9.0 installed using a Voodoo3 3000 change the video card
and install the new one or do I need to install again Mandrake 9, then the
NVIDIa files and then the Config XFree86 files changes?

Thanks a lot in advance

2002-10-08 Thread ddc_prueba

I have a NVIDIA Geforce 2 200MX and in another box a Geforce 1. Both go
smooth and fast in Windows (whatever-version) and linux. The only thing
you have to do is replace Mandrake nvidia driver with the nvidia's one
to be able to have acceleration, TV out and this kind of nice things.
There is a clear "guide for donkeys" (easy, as I got it... after some
effort, hehehe O;-)

The only thing I didn't get fully working is to get TV output and normal
PC monitor independent (when I activate TV out, I get the same picture
in my monitor as in my TV). Appart from that, not a complain.

Prices have come down, so if you finally go for nvidia I would get a 64
MB DDR (it is a bit faster), maybe a Geforce 4. I think there was a good
graphic board comparison at tomshardware, and it should suit you as
their perfomance in linux is similar to windows.

Hi,

I don't know what problems you're having with your Voodoo but I
must say thay my Voodoo3 3000 TV out is better than ever. I use 3D accel
for visualising molecules and so on. About games, I tested only Tuxracer
and it worked wonderfully!

I'd suggest you take a second chance with your Voodoo.

Thank you Kiran;
Yes, Radeon 9700 seems to be the fastets card but probably is apropriate
for image-professional and the support under linux might still be
defficient. Perhaps for me could be good an intermediate Nvidia; I think
64Mb Ram could be enought form me; I could buy a better and expensive
card, but I would never use most of the last characteristic, so why to
pay more for utilities I will never use?.

Thanks a lot for your very interesting e-mail

Re: [expert] New video card advice

2002-10-06 Thread Kiran

The voodoo 3 3000 is now an old card (works fine, but old) my suggestion
would be to figure out how much you want to invest in a video card and
well... choose from there. From my experience (perhaps limited) nVidia
seems to have better drivers for Linux, but my experience with ATI is
limited to older cards. I heard the Radeon 9700 is the fastest card on
the market now, but like all things wait a while and its obsolete (see
voodoo 3 3000). If I where a rich man I wouldn't have to judge
price/performance I would just buy the best when it came out but...

I run a Matrox G550 and a Hauppauge WinTV and they work well. It also worked
well using other Matrox cards such as G200, Millenium and Millenium II. Some
have been PCI and some AGP. Always with a 440BX chipset on the MoBo.

any of the "happaugge winTV" cards and any good video card, as long as you
have a mobo chipset that "correctly" supports pci timing specs. (ALI-1
ALI-magic and some VIA (I think it was a 686b southbrige, but I ain't sure
about that) admit that they don't work.
the question is more the Mobo Chipset and TV card than the video card and
TVcard, IMHO

oh, yeah, probably no one has an opinion on this. if you browse the
archives of this list or any other OSS-type list or site, you'll see
plenty of debate on this issue. IIRC correctly, the main argument
against ATI and for nVidia is that ATI's drivers are community developed
because ATI is not supportive to the Community, and nVidia provides
relatively high quality binaries, which is rare. And when you consider
windows drivers are almost never released as source (excluding creative,
of course)...

There are good arguments for nVidia to open up their source, but it
seems like there are ideological flaws with the way each company deals
with drivers. I think in the end, any card post-GeForce2, ATI or nVidia
is gonna really fly on just about whatever you throw at it for a while
to some. Read some reviews and make a choice, I think either way you're
gonna be pleased with a new vid card. anandtech and tomshardware both
do reviews with way too much info for the common man (c), but they are
well respected and thorough, and tend to show >=GeForce2 on top. But
like I said, either is gonna give great performance.
