Hi

I had same problem and after hard search found..(noticed) that LM7.2
uses XINETD...also reads XINETD.CONF...so you have to edit
xinetd.con or activate INET,whic uses INETD.CONF where telnet
and ftp etc are configured...Anyway I managed get telnet working
by activating INET in bootup.

RE: [expert] No telnet into my 7.2 box?

2000-11-05 Thread cloak

yes, that was exactly correct. I'd actually found allow/deny and they were
of course fine.

The telnet server was the culprit... never dawned on me that it wouldn't
install it.

Thanks much for the help!

Good point. He should get /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny setup BEFORE
he enables telnet access.

But that is not his problem right now. He said it's not listening. No
server there. If it were there he might get a connection refused.

RE: [expert] No telnet into my 7.2 box?

2000-11-05 Thread Bill Shirley

Make
sure you have the telnet-server installed:
[root@elmo /root]# rpm -qa | grep
telnettelnet-0.16-4mdktelnet-server-0.16-4mdk
Make
sure the entry for telnet is  not commented out in
/etc/inetd.conf:
telnet
stream  tcp nowait  root
/usr/sbin/tcpd  in.telnetd
However, you really should install ssh-server and use ssh to remotely
login.  It used to be, and probably still is, on the makdrake-crypto
site.  I use the free-for-private-use ssh Windows client to get into my LM
7.1 box.

Install the telnet server rpm (telnet-server-0.17-5mdk.i586.rpm)
from the Mandrake install CD (CD 1) and in /etc/inetd.conf
uncomment the telnet line. A newbie install most likely didn't
include the telnet-server.

Woody

Install command:
rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/telnet-server-0.17-5mdk.i586.rpm
