[expert] SB PCI 128 FIXED! READ THIS!!

1999-08-09 Thread alann

First, let me say THANKS to the many people who have responded with
ideas.!!

I TRULY thank all of you.. But I stumbled across this myself and think
I found a bug.

First, the fix. To refresh, I had partial sound, but NO CD sound, and
no realplay. I did have .wav and sounds in
enlighenment/gnome, but many .wav's I played were distorted.
I tried sndconfig with all options, no good. Someone said rmmod sound,
I got no sound loaded or something..

Last night someone posted rmmod soundcore.. I tried it and got sound
module is in use..

So for the heck of it ( this was all logged in as root btw, I retried
sndconfig and got Linus, and tried a CD,
wham!.. This was in KDE as root. I then booted into KDE as user, worked
fine.. Didn't have time for gnome/enlighenment, hadda
goto work.

Here's the breaker! After work, booted into gnome/enlightenment, and
played a CD.. Worked..

Ahh.. I fixed it.. Well then I broke it. GMIX.
The current version of GMIX that comes with Mandrake 6.0.
I opened it and moved the CD volume and got a "pop" then silence.
( My gut feeling all along was gnome broke it since from what I
*remember* when I first installed Mandrake 6.0 I was a KDE user
and had never played with gnome but was curious about it and *think* I
remember CD working, but not sure.)

So,, did the same as above and sound is back.. Opened KMIX from gnome
and all is well.

Needless to say, I have now removed GMIX from the system!

Hope any Mandrake people reading this can hopefully verify!

Thanks again.
Alan

0) Get your card name, either from windows_bug_inside (see 1), either in your
PC doc, or on the chips of your card

0.5) Read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/*
You need to have installed the kernel sources ...

1) If you own zindoz, get your parameters for the sound card from Config Panel
(I wonder what is it exact name in english version of zinbug) then in System,

2) Try these parameters with sndconfig
Note: only try SB if you really own a sound blaster really made by creative
labs. There are really little cards compatible with the sb on the *hardware
side*.
Le WSS driver (zindoz sound system) is the driver which manage the greater
number of snd cards.

##

3) If sndconfig fail to get your snd card work, try to configure your BIOS for
a non plug&play (pry?) os ("pnp os: no") if possible
It's possibl with award and ami bioses

4) At boot time, the bios'll display the sndcards parameters.
Write down them for sndconfig

##

5) If sndconfig keep not work, try isapnp:
"pnpdump -c > /etc/isapnp.conf"
Exec "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf" to initialize the ISA pnp cards (which'll be
magically done on next boots)
If sndconfig doesn"t work, try alter the parameters of /etc/isapnp.conf

##

8) The experts could try compile a kernel in order to compile the driver in
kernel, not as module

##

7) There is an alternative to OSS/free (the snd driver of Linux) : ALSA
(Advanced Linux Sound System) (http://www.alsa-project.org/)
You'll have to compile the driver, the libs and the utils in order to get it
work.

Yes, I dloaded the oss drivers.. No luck.

Here's what happens.
When I do > rmmod sound I get "module sound not loaded"

Yet, I have partial sound.

With this if I try oss install I get:
*** Sound driver is already running - trying to unload it ***

It looks like the sound driver is linked in the kernal you are currenlty
executing.
You should configure recompile the kernal without the built in sound
driver and to reboot before trying to install
OSS/Linux again.

Can I assume from this thread that someone has tried the SB Live drivers
with a SB 128 and gotten it to work?

I have a SB 128 PCI and AFAIK it is a totally different card than the SB
Live.
I believe it is a ESS1371 chipset, same as the Ensoniq 128's.
I had good luck using sndconfig under Mandrake 6.0 even though it gave me
the same initial error messages someone else reported.

You may have luck with the the newest OSS drivers.
I had to do a:
rmmod sound
rm /lib/modules/misc/sound*
reboot
then run the oss-install script again. bingo.

IMHO the OSS drivers are of better quality than the free ones that comes
as modules.

good luck,

-Ben

I think that might help you understand the remarks better.
I note no report on trying the step-by-step at ZDNN.  Since I don't
have a SBLive and I have been having trouble (along with everyone else
in the world) getting packages they want to register you for.  (The
authentication routine loops you back to registering again and again.)
I would suggest you CALL Creative and get them to send you the software
by mail on a disk.  There is a way to bypass the authentication routine,
but not for people who don't know how to clean up logs and avoid the temptations
of absolute power.
It is very rare yet where we find a manufacturer who is willing to write

0) Notez le type de votre carte, soit à l'aide de Windows (voir 1), soit dans
votre documentation, soit sur un autollant sur l'une des puces de la carte.

0.5) Lisez /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/*

"pnpdump -c > /etc/isapnp.conf"

Are you sure about this? I've got sndconfig to work first time out of the box,
and I've never booted to single user mode ever.

Instead, it sounds like some service is interfering, and when you switch to

Are you sure about this? I've got sndconfig to work first time out of the box,
and I've never booted to single user mode ever.

Instead, it sounds like some service is interfering, and when you switch to
single-user, it turns the service off. Since sndconfig uses isapnp stuff, you
might also want to look at that.

Well, my face was very red after I realized that sndconfig is set up to
run properly only in single-user mode in the 6.0 scheme, and it is just
as true for the RH version.  I failed to set up a SB Ensoniq in 5.3
and 6.0 but had no trouble in 6.0 after starting up in single mode
LILO: linux 1
Works for me.
So I am guessing that we have a thread or process interfering when
we try it in multi-user mode.  I have set up excellent sound
with SiS chipsets which others claimed no luck or tinny also unsing linux
single.  Of course, there is another resort
/usr/src/linux-2.2.x/Documentation/sound
has some files that can help with isapnp.conf and with modules to load

I *have* sound, except CD audio.  I can play .wav's ( although
many seem
to be terribly distorted, and play fine in windows. ).
Can play .mp3s, movies, etc, except CD's.  I get NO sound.
Yes, turned
up in mixers, cable is good, etc.
If I run sndconfig ( as su AND logging in as root ) I get the initial
screen and it recognizes the card as Ensoniq AudioPCI 1370 ( SB 64/128
PCI ).  It tells me it is playing a sample and no sound, then
error
message something like chourus, flange, echo, ( a lot of fx parameters
)..  If I try again it says /dev/dsp not found.  If I try
to run
sndconfig again and change it to Ensoniq 1371, it fails, something
about
module 1371.o busy or in use.
Anyone got a clue?  This SAME hardware worked PERFECT with Mandrake
5.3,
and when I installed 6.0 I did a wipe of the drive and a clean install.
BTW, I've tried sndconfig with --noautoconfig and --noprobe..
I can NOT
get to the screen where you set up DMA, IRQ, etc.
Can't get there from here!
Please help since this is driving me insane! :O
