Further examination yields the following devices in /dev:

[root@access /root]# ls -l /dev/*st0*
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 128 Dec 13 15:44 /dev/nrst0
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 128 Sep 27 2000 /dev/nst0
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 224 Sep 27 2000 /dev/nst0a
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 160 Sep 27 2000 /dev/nst0l
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 192 Sep 27 2000 /dev/nst0m
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 0 Dec 13 15:04 /dev/rst0
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 0 Dec 13 15:40 /dev/st0
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 96 Dec 13 15:40 /dev/st0a
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 32 Dec 13 15:40 /dev/st0l
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 64 Dec 13 15:40 /dev/st0m

Btw, I have a duplicate system, similarly configured, it presents the same
error message, but has no difficulty seeking.

Any clues?

A long shot, try removing the module aic7xxx and inserting the module
aic7xxx_old, I found that the newer module would work properly with
this module. I had tape and scanner attached via the adaptec card. The
old module solved all my 'weird' symptoms.

You can do the module bit as root using 'insmod' etc... before making
the change permanent.

My dmesg file is long overwritten by useless junk (wish the bootup copy
was saved somewhere rather than clobbered), so all I can provide is what
my two *old* tape drives look like...

[expert] SCSI Tape Issues

2001-12-13 Thread Albert E. Whale

I am having problems using my Sony SDT-9000 DDS3 capable drive.
Recently it appears that the drive will no longer seek. One item which
was brought to my attention was the following messages (from dmesg) on
boot.

aic7xxx: at PCI 0/9/0
aic7xxx: I/O ports already in use, ignoring.
st: bufsize 32768, wrt 30720, max buffers 5, s/g segs 16.
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 6, lun 0
Unable to get major 9 for SCSI tapes

Has anyone experienced this before??? I have already checked the /dev
directory and have the following:

[root@access /root]# ls -l /dev/*st0
crw-rw1 root disk 9, 128 Sep 27 2000 /dev/nst0
crw-r--r--1 root root 9, 0 Dec 13 15:04 /dev/rst0
crw-rw-rw-1 root disk 9, 0 Sep 27 2000 /dev/st0

I created the /dev/rst0 device hoping to alleviate the problem, with no
luck.

TIA for your assistance.
