[expert] Single network firewall install problem

2002-03-19 Thread John Bodden

I am trying to install the Mandrake Single network Firewall. The machine
is an
AMD k6-2/450 with 128 Mb Ram (2 64 MB DIMMS) and a 10 GB Hard drive. The
board
has video integrated on the board that uses 8 mb of Ram for video. The
problem
is when I start the install it gets to the loading 2nd stage ram disk
and
bombs with an "error creating RAM disk" error message.

I have swapped the ram with ram that I know works, I have tried each
stick in
either slot, both together and singly. I have tried the mem=120M option
as
well as mem=128M. The CD will install the software on another computer
so I
assume the CD is good.

I am able to install Mandrake 7.1 on this machine with no problem, but
the SNF
and 8.1 will not install

Any ideas?

John

Two things that could be the problem:
1) CD ROM (Swap the CD ROM from a box that you know works)
2) Network Card (The SNF does not work with the tulip driver) Using 2
3COM NICs of the same model need to be configured from within the cards bios
before you install the OS. Usualy you can install the OS but I have had it
lockup on Second Stage Ram Disk.

I have had a simular issues with the SNF. I have had to swap CR ROMs on
several boxes - also if you used an ISO to create the CD you may have a
problem there with the boot image ( I have had it work on some and not on
others also). Create the CD with the lowest speed setting - like 4x. Youe
can also make a boot disk and boot from the floopy disk. I have also had to
swap floppy drives and had problems with the floppy contoller that gave the
same results.
