You have to symlink /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 to /etc/X11/X, which must be
for the moment a link to /usr/X11R6/bin/SVGA (or another X seerver).

How do you configure XFree86 4.0? Is Xconfigurator already set up for the
new config file format? Or can you use XF86Setup or something?

Use XFdrake --xf4

Most of the X configuration tools you are familiar with are now either
deprecated or no longer maintained in the Mandrake distribution.

I set it up with xf86config, the text mode setup program.

Hmmm?

I've got XFree86 4.0.1 6mdk installed, and there /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 is
not a link, it is a full program. Actually I don't have
/usr/X11R6/bin/SVGA.

Of course :) He meant that /etc/X11/X needs to be a symlink to that binary

 Actually I don't have /usr/X11R6/bin/SVGA.

But you would if you had installed XF-3

Yes :) I had to run XF-3 when I first installed because the default
XF-4 config for a Voodoo3 card was broken. Once we figured out what the
default config was missing, I added it and switched the symlink. Worked
fine.
