One thing on my PS/2 trick that I failed to mention is that when you reboot and unplug the PS/2 mouse then when Linux starts the hadware wizard will ask if you want to remove the PS/2 mouse configuration. Either choose No or Ignore. Just out of curiousity. The system I had the problem on is a AMD 450 k6-2 with a VIA chip set. How many of you that are haiving this problem also have the VIA chip? But to make this story even more interesting, I did the following: The console mouse did not work from as early as boot time (/dev/mouse no such device). So I made a hardlink "ln /dev/usbmouse /dev/mouse". Rebooted. Checked the console, fire up mc, mouse working fine. I thought, well, it is sorted. I left my computer on for the night, then in the morning cursor is frozen in X, switching to console, getting the same erro message: "oops, error /dev/mouse no such device gpm invoked from gpm.c (170)" What is going on? I am almost at the point to stop the gpm demon and forget about console mouse, but this would not be a nice way to solve a problem..
