Thanks JS, I didn't think of that. I'm going to give it a go this weekend.

To make your life easier. If you do upgrade glibc and urpmi first. (You
can even skip glibc from my experience but I understand the value
here.) Then edit /etc/urpmi/skiplist. Add /apache2*/ (Someone check
the regular expression here with the man page.) to the list. Then do
the --auto --auto-select. It won't upgrade to apache2.. It will upgrade
apache, since 9.1 does have a slightly newer version of 1.3 but it won't
move you to apache2.

MDK9.1 indeed uses Apache2, in /etc/http/2.0

I needed apache_1.3.22, so I installed it to /opt/apache and disabled
the auto-startup for Apache2

Maybe you can copy your apache to a safer location, and change the
ServerRoot ?

As far as I've noticed, apache2 worked very well, but I didn't test it
that much.

I don't know about apache, but this kind of upgrade generally works, I
have done it to few machines, some of them remotely. Typically I do
first urpmi glibc and urpmi itself with their dependencies first, and
after that auto-select. Kernel can be done either before or after.

I have read some complains about Apache 2.0 in the php list.

However, I've been working with Apache 2 since version 2.0.44 and php
since version 4.3.0 without any problem. I started with 2.0.44 and 4.3.0
installing from tar under Mandrake 9. I am now using 2.0.45 (with last
security fixes) and php installed from Mandrake 9.1 cd's.

Again, no problem over here.

the time being as the two are not playing well together yet.

[expert] Upgrading 9.0 to 9.1 with urpmi

2003-06-05 Thread Greg Meyer
I usually do a lot of answering, but now I have a question to ask.

I have a file server that I am thinking of using urpmi to update. It does not
have X installed and runs samba, apache, mysql and acts as a print server,
controlling the print qeues for a directly attached printer and another on a
jetdirect. I also have been using it as a proxy for my kids computer so I
can control where they go with squidguard.

The reason I want to upgrade is to get a newer version of php than the 4.2.3
included with 9.0 (I think we are up to 4.3.2 now). The reason I want to use
urpmi is that this machine runs headless and without a keyboard and I don't
want to pull it out of it's corner so that I can attach a monitor and
keyboard in order to use the installer.

I am concerned because I think 9.1 uses apache2 by default, and I am not that
well versed in it and don't want to break anything. Has anybody tried it?
This is what I was thinking of doing: upgrade to the 9.1 kernel, then upgrade
urpmi to the version in 9.1, then do urpmi --auto-select.
