usually wrong xserver or video card parameters.  Run XFdrake and select
the proper settings.  If no luck, post details of what video card,
monitor etc and someone may be able to be more specific.

Hi,

Funny - I got the exact same symptom yeterday - it seemed that what caused
it was my sound card shorting out (!) - looks like X-windows was trying to
make some noise and failed. Removing the short fixed it (but the sound card
is mute, I'm afraid).

In general, you should be able to do 'alt-Fx' (x in 2..12) in the 5 minute
disable time to login w/o X. Then perhaps a look through
/var/log/XFree86.?.log will give some hint?
