Re: [expert] caching dns server

you did try nslookup hostname (nslookup www.linux.org) if you try just
nslookup without a host to actually look up, you will get this response.
May not be the problem, though

Re: [expert] caching dns server

2000-12-07 Thread Balaji Ramani

Hi,

If you look at the error message, you will see that it says that it cannot
find a name for the address 192.168.0.25. The problem is that there is no
proper reverse DNS mapping on the DNS server.

If you create a reverse DNS entry for 192.168.0.x, you should be able to run
nslookup. For more information, look at the DNS HOWTO.

Note that this problem does not prevent other programs from using the DNS
server. It is just that nslookup does not work properly. Try browsing the
network from that machine and you will be able to lookup names.

Re: [expert] caching dns server

2000-12-07 Thread Bill Kenworthy

I am just looking at this as part of checking everything on the new 7.2
install is working. On 7.1, I set the cacheing DNS up from scratch and
nslookup was fine. The question is, how can I reliably confirm that
cacheing DNS is working? The stats are a bit obtuse and I have not been
able to find a reference of what they are tring to tell me - can someone
point me to a guide?
