And I did just the opposite. My Soyo MB has VIA VT82C686 [Apollo Super
AC97/Audio] onboard and it sounded "garbled" as well. I disabled the onboard
sound, installed my old PNP ISA SB16, ran sndconfig and I was in business.

Sounds like the problem I had while X is running, in either Gnome
or KDE. It began in KDE 2.0. I didn't have it with KDE 1.94, 1.99.
What finally fixed it for me was KDE, Control Center | Sound |
Soundserver | and UNcheck "Start aRts soundserver on KDE startup'.
This disables system sounds (ie, sounds on clicks or keystrokes). I
previously tried enabling "Run sounderver with real time priority"
which helped some, so I've left it enabled. It's one of those things I
got fixed, but I'm not sure how or why, YMMV.

What do you mean by "distorted"? You could try changing some of the aRTs
settings in the Control Center -> Sound -> Sound Server section.

I myself had problems with my AudioPCI and a SB PCI 128 and sound distortion.
I would get a cricket-like chirping noise overlaying and overwhelming the
actual sounds (wav files, etc) though there was no problem when playing CDs.

Ultimately, I dumped my AudioPCI and the 128 and went with the built-in ac97
sound system on my motherboard. Not the best option, and not always an
option for others, but that was the quickest and easiest fix for me. It
works fine for my limited sound needs, at least.

If you cannot get aRTs to play nice, then I suppose you could dump it and go
with using strictly alsa or oss the old-fashioned way (which worked quite
well). I am not sure what is involved in that so someone else would need to
guide you in that endeavor.

[expert] distorted sound in LM72?

2000-12-07 Thread traun

hello:

I just installed LM72 on one of my friends computer, and I just ran in to a
problem with the soundcard: Soundblaster PCI128.
The sound is distorted, My friend is a DJ so there is no chance he can live with
that, so how do I fix that?
