The syntax is almost identical. But iptables can do a many more things.
I don't know the document in the link. I used the Packet-Filtering and NAT HOWTO
from netfilter.filewatcher.org

The are very good. And if you are familiar they have a little summary
concerining the changes between ipchains and iptables.

Quite true, but I would suggest migrating now if possible, as everything I've
read says eventually ipchains compatibility will be dropped, and it is quite
simple to get working.

Re: [expert] ipchains problem on 2.4.9

2001-08-30 Thread Dianne Marie Montesa

yeah, thats what i thought initially when i enabled
IPchains support on the kernel. there is nothing on
the Documentations of the kernel that i should already
go for iptables so i stick it out with ipchains so
that i dont need to do much on that server.

my mdk 8 has ipchains and iptables working smoothly. i
can switch to ipchains or iptables mode.

has any of you done upgrade from 2.2.x to 2.4 and got
ipchains working?

please help. thanks.

ipchains has been deprecated in 2.4, and you will need to migrate to
iptables instead. I don't know if there is a workaround to make ipchains
work on 2.4 or not.

[expert] ipchains problem on 2.4.9

2001-08-30 Thread Dianne Marie Montesa

hi list

i have an mandrake 7.2 machine that previously have
2.2.x kernel. i have upgraded the kernel to 2.4.9
lately. everything seemed to work fine except for
ipchains. when i execute ipchains commands, i get this
error message:

ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel

im pretty sure i have enabled ipchains (ipfilter, etc)
as module on my kernel but when i try to load it, i
get this error:

modprobe: Can't locate module ipchains

i checked on /lib/modules/2.4.9 and i really cant find
ipchains.o =(. i did upgrade my modutils, and i did
'make modules' and 'make modules_install'.

is there something else im missing? hope someone can
help me out.
