[expert] jpg/gif screen capture?

2001-09-01 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Can anyone suggest a screen capture program that uses the jpg or gif image
format? KDE's screen capture utility uses the .png format.

Could be a KDE or Gnome or X11 application.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much.

You could try changing the extension when you use ksnapshot - it comes up
with a default filename with a png extension; simply change that to a file
with a .jpg extension. I was doubtful, but sure enough, the image saved is
a JPEG file.

I'm currently running 2.2beta something.

Another approach would be to use xwd (X window dump) and then translate
the output to jpg with cjpeg and pbmplus utilities which can darn near
translate any graphic format to another graphic format by putting the
various conversions in a pipeline - something like 'xwdtoppm | pnmtogif'
would convert it to GIF.

PNG is a good graphics format, btw. gif is pretty much (thankfully. be-
cause of aggressive license patent issues) on the way out.
