I am running Mandrake 7.2, with custom kernel 2.2.17.
I am trying to upgrade to Mandrake 8.0.
I have downloaded all the 8.0 directory(I have DSL!) in
/usr/tmp/mdk8 directory.
As root I cd to /usr/tmp/mdk8 directory and run ./live_update. it
pops up a window saying press upgrade to 'Upgrade' after I press
Upgrade button, it starts doing something and then just crashes.
What is wrong? Can't I run live_update from hard disk? do I HAVE TO
burn a CD, and then run live_update?
Please help
No, but the 7.2 live_update will _not_ work on 8.0. Try making a
hd.img floppy and booting from that and selecting update. Even that
will leave artifacts and incorrect links.
The 7.2 live_update is based on rpm3 programs and 8.0 packages
require rpm4. Moreover, packaging and library naming policies
changed between the two distros, so live_update would for example try
to update cups and find one of the three packages that make it up,
because only one package is referent in 7.2. Even once found, it
could do nothing because the RPM packages are for different versions
of RPM and even the LIBRARY dependencies are changed.
The Update from 8.0 works, after a fashion, with a host of cleanup
activities afterwards. We have never before had a technology curve
between distros that was close to as steep as this one, so it is a
miracle that it works at all. It is definitely not recommended.
