If you have DAT tape you are in trouble, actually search dejanews i
remember
some people were able to do it on dat tapes but it was rather cumbersome
task

i had a big tar archive on a tape. A new small tar archiv was  created and the
same tape. 
Have anyone a idea, how I can recover the non overwritten parts on this tape.
